Is Team Melli used by the regime for propaganda and legitimacy? Of course. The regime uses anything popular in Iran for that purpose. Cinema, wrestling, science, culture, national celebrations.

If this team was full of young kids, I could actually empathize with them. I understand that they could have used this platform to set themselves up financially.

The majority of the players are pretty set financially and in the twilight of their career. This World Cup appearance is not going help them get that big contract in the big leagues. They have been to several world cups.
