Esteghlal defeats Saipa to stay on top [VIDEO]

Loading...Press TV – TEHRAN, Tehran’s popular soccer team, Esteghlal, has defeated Saipa to remain on top of Iran’s Premier League (IPL) table in the 19th week of the season.
The Blues, who were determined to extend their lead on the top of the standings, had the upper hand early on at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran on Monday but they were unable to convert any of their numerous chances in the first half.
Esteghlal continued to press after the break and managed to hold off Saipa after its striker Farzad Hatami broke the deadlock and headed Ali Hamoudi’s cross into the back of the net in the 54th minute.
Coached by Amir Qalenoei, Esteqlal held on to the 1-0 victory to stand atop of the IPL table with 37 points.
In Tabriz, Teraktorsazi defeated Peykan of Tehran 1-0 at Takhti Stadium to climb to the third place in the IPL standings.
Tony Oliviera’s men were quick to open the scoring as Flavio Lopez converted a penalty in the 8th minute. After the goal, Teraktorsazi dominated the first half while Peykan were eager to make the most of their few opportunities.
In the second half, Peykan showed a better performance but failed to change its 1-0 loss.
In other encounters on Monday, Aluminum Hormozgan snatched a 2-1 win over Damash Gilan, and Naft Tehran and Mes drew scoreless.
