Without Hashemian and Azizi. If it was not for Azizi and Hashemian, Iran would not have even made it to the final qualifying round. Both of them were excluded from TM under Branko for a couple of crucial years.

In the prelim qualifying round, Iran lost to Jordan (yes Jordan) in TEHRAN!!! The team that had Karimi, Kia, Neku, Golmo, Daei, (no Hashemian, no Azizi) etc etc lost to Jordan in Tehran!!!

So CQ is in the top 3 worst coaches ever for TM.

      That's even lower than MMK.

      Hallelujah, Praise the Lord!

he is an obnoxious character and retarded tactician..! yet with his deep dalaal connections and with hefty budget he was a capable team builder and knew how to put up a capable squad for success for unsophisticated local league where team tactics didnt matter much but picking a strong team was more a key to winning titles..!

8 years! No coach ever had the opportunity to do such damage. Although obvious the 5 members who got it right should be congratulated.

Ali Daei - Great player but horrible coach. He damaged our whole WCQ 2010, when Qotbi came the damage was allready done and our chances to reach the WC 2010 was slim, so cant blame Qotbi. If Qotbi would have got the job in first Place i Think we would by worst go as third best team in the Group. Even North Korea and Saudi got above us in the table… Thats for me the worst results TM ever got.

Let's look forward and cut the crab. The june game against Korea.....who will be caretaker?
Are you taking the piss? Are you trying to say that our Asian Cup 2019 team was better than Branko's crop in 2006? This alone defeats all of your credibility LOL.

In 2006 we had 2 or 3 star players in a certain position, while in 2019 we have good players in every position, but no star players like we did in 2006. But in 2006 we didn’t have good players in every position, only a few...

Oh yeah, and you can’t say Ali Daei... he was not in his prime in 2006.

2 or 3? Mahdavikia, Rezaie, Nekoonam, Zandi, Teymourian, Karimi, Hashemian.... Dyscalculia strikes again.
With players like this even without a coach we should have been able to obtain the results that we did, especially when we are talking about a CONCACAF seed and an African nobody.

I went to Sharif University. I'm a superior genetic mutation, an improvement on the existing mediocre stock.

if haveing good players is the sole reason that makes you champions then Barcelona should be champions all the time. Good players are nothing without the right system, right coach and right back bone. See what CQ did with 2011-2014 team, who was a star in that team? An ageing Nekunam? A player like Gucci who played in Holland? One single man did this and his name was CQ, there is no deny in that. You guys can go on and compare this years team with that years team. Our prime was in in 98-2006 era, what did we achive? One win against USA and 3rd Place in Asian cup. Did we play well? did we not get scored on left and right? CQ did not win anything with us but he made something no other coach ever did and he made us have a chance to win against strong teams like Argentina, Nigeria, Marocco, Chile, South korea, Japan, Portugal, Spain and so on. With other Words he made us competative and thats the whole Point in sports is it not? To go out there and have a real chance to win. And he did this with the players he had and none of them were any super stars. Are you telling me Branko or any other coach did the same? Guys need to stop comparing Branco with CQ. Branco had his chance and did pretty well and so did CQ. Noone even spoke about Branko after he left in 2006 and now when CQ is gone and Branko is the maneger of Perspolis people start to compare and some even want him to be the next TM coach.

I don't even need to bring up Daei...lol

In 2006 we had Kaebi Golmohammadi Rezaei Nosrati as a defense. That's actually better than our current back 4 barring left back. Nosrati and Golmohammadi were good CBs and Rezaei was based in Europe. Kaebi was an amazing right back. We also had bakhtiarizadeh and Amir Hossein Sadeghi, the latter actually being one of our best defenders in 2014 World Cup.

Midfield/Wingers: We had Nekounam (better than any player in our current squad right now), Mahdavikia (better than any player in our current squad right now), Zandi (would be one of our best players right now), Ali Karimi (better than any player in our current squad right now), Teymourian (better than any midfielder in our current squad right now), Navidkia (better than any midfielder in our current squad right now), Javad Kazemian (on the level of Torabi), Madanchi (not as technically gifted as Torabi but he had great stamina and strength and ended up playing a lot in the World Cup), and of course Shojaei, young but you know his talent level. It must be noted that we left Mobali at home.

Strikers: I won't mention Daei because he sucks but...Hashemian (better than any of our strikers right now and even though Azmoun is gonna end up being 10x better than him when it's all said and done, he was at Azmoun's level at the time), Borhani (he was on the level of Taremi; always came in with good goals for us but he was a chance bottler), Khatibi and Enayati were both terrible.

So no, we didn't have "2-3 star players" in 2006. We had a pretty strong squad. In defense probably stronger and deeper than our squad now, and midfield/wingers way better. In striker, Azmoun probably is above any of the 2006 strikers but only a hair better than Hashemian (who was wasted on the left wing by Branko to accommodate Daei).

Our squad in 2006 was much much better than our current squad. Our current squad is more balanced but only by a bit and it's more because the overall quality in terms of talent is not as good. Not saying our current squad is bad, but 2006 squad was on another level.

                          This is false.

Let's use our lineups against key opposition.

                          Iran vs Mexico..

Mirzapour, Nosrati, Golmohammadi, Rezaei, Kaabi, Nekounam, Teimourian, Mahdavikia, Karimi, Daei, Hashemian was our team vs Mexico. Besides the obvious fault of Daei playing, its about as strong a lineup as we have ever had. On our bench, we had Madanchi, Borhani, Kazemian, Navidkia, Shojaei and don't forget Fereydoon Zandi.
The pedigree difference between then and now is insane. Keep in mind that Rezaei remains our only top 5 league CB in history.
That's a strong lineup. Our strongest sans Daei obviously. And if properly coached we could have beaten Mexico cleanly. "If"....

                          Iran vs Morocco

Beiro, Hajsafi, Cheshmi, , PAG, Rezaian, Ebrahimi, Jahanbakhsh, Shojaei, Amiri, Ansarifard, Azmoun. Taremi/Ghoddos/M. Hosseini came on. Realistically observe the difference in player pedigree and then compare it to the results each obtained.
If you want an even better comparison compare the lineups vs Portugal in 2006 vs 2018 and then compare results.

While on this subject and seeing that Diz hit the nail on the head before me... lets talk about other key matchups. We both had situations where we needed to win in South Korea to qualify to the World cup. Here is what Ghotbi worked with...

South Korea vs Iran June 17, 2009:

Rahmati, Mahdavikia, Hosseini, Aghili, Nekounam, Karimi, Kaebi, Pejman Nouri, Nosrati, Shojaei. Khalatbari, Borhani, Hashemian as subs.

South Korea vs Iran June 18, 2013

Rahman Ahmadi, Amir Hossein Sadeghi, Hashem Beikzadeh, Montazeri, Hosseini, Khosro Heydari, Ando, Jabbari, Nekounam, Shojaei, Gucci.

Subs; Gholamreza Rezaei, Farzad Hatami, Hajsafi.

^^^^^ Look at that quality difference and the outcome.

The question isn't who is the worst it is who was the most damaging.

I'm saying our 2006 was in terms of talent/pedigree miles ahead of the one we have now. Their play gave different results though.

Our players now are more talents, for the moment - they hadn't yet achieved too much on the club stage apart from one outstanding season in holland and a few lovely goals in the champions league.

Back then we had players who had been given consecutive awards in the Bundesliga (teams of the year for bundesliga, player of the year for their clubsx3), a defender who had 5 seasons of experience in Serie A, players who were considered the most talented in Asia.

We are talking about a number of our finest ever players here and a perfect balance between lots of experience in Europe's top leagues and new players who would be considered amongst our best of all time

The other asian nations were really scared of our individual players then:

That's why I think anyone who follows TM from a truly long-term perspective and cares about the national team will be annoyed that the coach didn't get a chance to complete his project. This crop of international players were ones that he nurtured from scratch rather than inherited, and are still talents rather than the finished article, which I imagine they will be individually and as a team in 2022....

                                Oh well.
