My final take on the US - Belguim game is that:

Had this been a WC knockout game between Iran and Belgium at the Azadi Stadium, there is no way we would have lost so heavily. Maybe by one goal and on a good day, the game might have gone to extra time and then penalties where anything can happen.

This US performance was embarrassingly bad and all the pundits are condemning it.

^ I think the US had a relatively easy path. Facing Paraguay, Bosnia, Turkey, none of which are worldclass. The weaknesses became clear once they faced their first tough opponent.

Under normal conditions, I don't think the US would have lost 4-1 playing on their own turf. I think the negativity around the red card controversy had a huge impact on the team. It also energized the Belgium team. That end-of-the game dance, mocking Trump tells us that this was a big issue with them in the locker room

This loss lands squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff, US media, and Trump.
1) The coaching staff did not prepare this team at home to make Mickey Mouse mistakes.
2) US media created a huuuuuge hype around this game which was too much, and inappropriate for the US. This caused a huge expectation and pressure on the team,
3) Trump sticking his nose into this to make himself relevant after a disastrous 4th of july show, just like everything he touch he fcuks up.
