In a 1-striker formation system El-Kaabi is always better than Mehdi, no questions asked. The difference in speed and athleticism is night and day. Its just like how if TM played 1 striker, you always want in-form Azmoun over Taremi too, he's just not a explosive 9. Everytime he comes on during CL matches he's the slowest player on the pitch (even if he's subbed on fresh at min 70).
The coach hasn't really trusted him with any important moments for us to say he's been excellent.
