a team with no physical fitness program and trainer is as good as a lame sitting duck at the WC.

the ppl who for more than a year kept refusing to acknowledge the team's left side was a disaster. or the defense really was sub par.
hell I had ( until a while ago ) a picture of the poll in F+ citing weaknesses of TM that we'd like changed.
out of all the members who voted for various areas such as defense, left wing, strikers, GK .... only two ppl voted for the option: "No. TM has NO weak points" !!
one was human !

and it was NOT only for "show", as the staff ( starting form the head coach) , really believed the team didnt have any weak points.
once a person refuses to see a weak point, he will NEVER act to rectify it.
and that's what happened.

sub par coach w sub par staff results in sub par results.

thanks ali jan for the recap of some of branko's NUMEROUS failings. but bahram jan , I must say I am tired of going over how idiotic and moronic branko was in his last 2 years.
how he screwed up a great opportunity with one mistake followed by another bad decision.

was branko bad after AC04 up to his last days? yes, bahram jan. he was absolutely HORRIBLE.

but to answer you on the quality of game.
If you remember, I always said I'd rather go down shouting & fighting, than die out like a whimper.

we were that whimper under branko. a team that had absolutely no impact on anything , made no news, attracted no critic's attention, ... and to my dismay, we were the team that was IMMEDIATELY forgotten as soon as the ref blew in his whistle in our last game !
it was as if the WC could have had 31 teams ( no Iran ) and nobody would have noticed !!
if this isnt the saddest thing for a football fan , then I dont know what is.

I always said let us take risks and show what we are capable of.
let us fight w tooth and nail. go into game HUNGRY not scared & cautious.
kill our arses to score goals, even if we concede 2 for every one that we score.
I'd have loved to lose to portugal 5-3 than that 2-0.
let us be a team that even in its elimination the critics would remember and admire our fighting tenacity & courage.

Branko needs to be judged based on his own merit not in comaprison to GN. Whether GN is worst or IFF couldn't hire a better coach or not is a different issue I think. If we go by that mentality, then Branko should have stayed our coach forever?

Branko't team did poor in WC. Part of it was due to players getting into campes and stuff, part of it was injury to a few key players. But both of these issues were result of poor management by head coach (Branko in this case). Had he developed Shojai to fill in Karimi's void, Mobali, Hashemain, Enayati or even forget enayati (any other forwards, being Hamid Shafie, Mohsen Khalili or sag or Gorbeh) had injries to our TM would have been so dramatic?Instead of making Ali Deai play in every bloody (even friendly) game, he could have developed other forwards. He could have developed a good sub that migth play for Karimi had he gotten injured or not playing well. Had he done those, injury to a few players wouldn't have been as impacting.

The whole thing with Branko is just the "Ball issue". Ala in the main forum, still follows that guy in Dynamo Zagreb Branko Thread (same thread that caused me two bans). Read Branko's interview before the Dynamo Zagreb Werder Bereman game. The man (Branko) isn't ambitious, doesn't take risk, for him life is about playing it safe. That won't be the attitude that gets us anywhere at the WC level.

Iran's team, got Mexico on a very bad day and could have played much better and come out with a tie. Portugal game our team was just miserable, watch the game again, see where Hashemian is. Our team reminded me of the old Egypt team in WC 82 where they scored a goal on Ireland and then defeneded whole 11 player in their own 18 (our team never scored a gaol on Portugal and still defended with 11 players). Angola game another Mediocare game.

Please don't bring that guy up or remotely suggest we can't do better than him. GN is AFC became a baby Branko in a way (he became Conservative and didn't trust his instinct and somehow followed the Branko's footsteps in playing certain players no matter what!!!). As you can see, I am not a Branko fan and mere mentioning his name and suggesting that what Iran showed during the WC 2006 is the ceiling of our football doesn't go well with me.

As for "Bezaneem Toosh" and scoring goals I think that is a far reach. As for your claim about Iranina forwards, I dont' think we have data that shows Iranian forwards are necessarily worst than other nationality forwards. The whole soccer game has become much more defensive 4-5-1 and 3-6-1 means less forwards. Goalies have become taller and bigger. Their wing span (when one stand and streach fully his hands both ways) of goalies in average has increased. USSF suggested several years ago to increase goal size, in order to compensate for a bigger stronger goalies, but ofcourse all more traditional federations (Italy, ... ) opposed it, since their mentality is grand father Luigi played football that way it has to remain the same. Anyhow I digressed, it is harder to score goals in general in today's football. I dont' think it is a specific Iranian issue. Although the whole Daie issue in TM for a 3-4 years almost didn't allow for other forwards to grow in TM.

I think the first part of your post can potentially contradict the second part. As you said every player will go through a slump (at times for an extended period). Look at Ando right now in Bolton. So maybe Akbarpoor and Ooladi just having a down time. Plus, add another factore that we don't see Ooladi and Akbarpoor on TV (at least I don't, maybe u live in UAE or something and you do). They must be doing ok, if the UAE teams keep them. UAE teams have no Taaroof, see Daie, Minavand, Borhani and Kaabi. loately Majidi who got deported from UAE. If these guys (Akbar poor and Ooldai) don't deliver in UAE, they wouldn't have been picked or lasted there.
