The head coach of Iran’s women’s national ski team has been barred from leaving the country to attend an international tournament after her husband objected to her taking a trip abroad, according to local news agencies. Samira Zargari was expected to coach her team at the Alpine competitions in Italy but her husband refused to give her the permission to travel, citing a religious law in Iran that requires women to have the consent of their spouses for foreign trips. The decision has again raised the issue of women's rights in Iran, with president Hassan Rouhani’s deputy for women and family affairs describing it as a “breach of human rights of women”. “There are times when Iranian women have to travel abroad for their business responsibilities or attend sports or scientific competitions. On these occasions they represent our country and when their departure depends on the agreement of their spouses this causes a friction between them and at the end it is the word of the husbands that breach the right of the women involved”, Masoumeh Ebtekar told ILNA news agency. Iran’s Ski Federation has been criticised by local women’s rights activists for giving in to the pressure of hardliners who control the country’s sports ministry. One of its officials told Shargh daily: “We had done our utmost best to see that Ms Zargari would leave for Italy but sadly at the end the sports ministry refused to issue a travelling visa for her in accordance with her husband’s wish”. Samira Zargari is not the first Iranian woman in sport barred from taking part in international competitions due to the objection of her spouse. Zahra Nemati, the archery champion in two previous Paralympic Games was prevented from attending the competition in 2016 after her husband disagreed with her trip to Brazil. She reacted by asking for a divorce.
