Hi guys (Carlos Queiroz fan speaking),

Team Melli, for the first 4 years under Carlos relied heavily on dropping back and defensive tactics. We didn’t have players who were game changers so Queiroz pursued foreign based Khalili brothers, Davari, Reza and Ashkan. At Brazil, Carlos decided to solely executed defensive tactics and counterattack against all opponents. Not to say he distrusted his domestic based players, but he was well aware of their individual abilities. Which is part of why he cut a player like Khalatbari.

I’m paraphrasing: Carlos said, “With the level of Iranian football and the domestic league, Iran doesn’t have a single chance to make it to the next round at the World Cup.” He also said, “The chance for Iranian players to make the national team roster will be lower, if they choose domestic Iranian clubs over their European offers.” Starting in Fall 2014, Carlos started making big changes to the roster. More than half of Team Melli’s roster changed by 2015-16, and it was for the better. More and more domestic based talent moved to Europe. Many of CQ’s critics who had criticized his decisions for calling up the likes of Amiri, Rezaeian, Ghafouri and others kept quiet. Especially when they realized “Oh shit, he does know what he’s doing.” We had a variety of young talent in our squad who had the potential of hurting stronger opponents. Despite being defensive at the 2018 World Cup, CQ’s plan worked against Morocco. And although Iran parked the bus versus Spain, in the last 20 minutes of the match we watched Iniesta and friends in their own box defending against the Iran.

Why do I bring all of this up? Because from 2016-18 we saw an Iran national team who began to slowly shy away from their defensive style of play. And a big reason for that was the group of players we had at our disposal. This is why I really wanted Carlos to stay after the Asian Cup. I truly believed that the 3rd time was the charm for CQ at both the World Cup and the Asian Cup. But that’s just me and my personal thoughts having watched 99% of matches while CQ was a coach.

I also think that as Iranians, it's sort of embedded in our culture to hold onto the past. To overly compare/contrast the past with the present and refuse to move on. As much as our current circumstances suck, now is really not the time to be pessimistic. We need to keep united and support Skocic and the national team. Despite being a fan of CQ, I support Skocic. He has proven he deserves his position. He has gotten results and has been the coach of the second half. I know his credentials are nowhere hear CQ. I know he didn't coach any other national teams before Iran. I also know that he's got a very talented roster at his disposal, many of which were not present in that 1-0 loss against South Korea. But the reality is, we need to forget about Carlos coming back because that chapter ended. He's not coming back. Now is the time to be behind our national team and unconditionally support them. They’re not going through a good time and they need positive energy. We can see they’re trying to keep focused on their preparations, even though they know their preparations have been lackluster.

I appreciate your response. I really do. I think we both know where we stand on this issue. Just a couple of quick notes. I 100% agree that CQ, overall, was a great coach and left many positives for Iranian football. The other thing is that we compare CQ with Skocic heads up but we have to consider that when CQ took over, we had much less legionnaires and no covid, so it was easier to get camps going, make a cohesive team and implement you ideas, go to West Asian tournaments and try things, etc, etc... Skocic has hardly had any of that. Thank you Kateb jan for the dialogue.
