I think 18 or 19 is sufficient to make it. especially since 4 of the teams in the group are 7 points behind us. But we must aim to become first in the group to insure our ranking does not drop so that we can get placed in pot 3 for the WC.Originally posted by mbaizai View PostNow that we have 9 points. Can we say 9 more points or total of 18 pts is enough to qualify?

With current standings we are 100% through with 15 pointsOriginally posted by Damavand View PostI think 18 or 19 is sufficient to make it. especially since 4 of the teams in the group are 7 points behind us. That's not a given at all. Japan as the 3rd seed could still easily make it through the playoff and then subsequent home and away against middle america team (Costa Rica or so for example).
I also rather have Japan qualify because they are the only reliable team out of asia to make it out of the group and improve asian standing. Saudi Arabia usually gets destroyed badly against any semi-decent team and SK and Australia are hit and miss. Iran usually delivers acceptable/solid results but has never made it out of the group stage.
I for one usually do root for SK and Japan during the world cup.

If you want to see Asian soccer elevated to the next level, you need to root for teams other than Japan, South Korea and Australia, who have qualified many times and have advanced to the round of sixteen without making any sizable improvement in their overall global standing. (This could partly be attributed to the fact that most other teams in Asia have been stagnant since the advent of this fabulous game.) Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia, despite having qualified for the WC numerous times, are no better today than they were 20 years ago. In fact, with the possible exception of Australia, even with all the vast resources at their disposal, these four countries have reached the saturation point and are clearly weaker than before. Compare that to Iran (taking the abysmal economic situation into consideration, of course), UAE, China, Syria, Oman, Qatar and Vietnam, who are considerably better today and are likely to continue improving-- should they get the opportunity to participate in the World Cup and other significant soccer competitions in the coming decades. It might even be healthy for Asia if these four teams sat out a WC or two, paving the way for the likes of Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Oman, Iraq and China to flourish by competing against world class opponents and gradually bringing the continent closer to the rest of the world.Originally posted by rizz View PostThat's not a given at all.
