Lol, Potter is a funny manager. Look at who he subbed in the match. When he’s got a winger who thinks like a center attacking midfielder in Jahanbakhsh warming his bench. A player who can help change the game for him. Funny manager this Potter is.

didnt see the game, but this i know that ARJ is a Winger through and through..! he shines best as a pure attacking winger..!!
he would definitely be ill-suited and handicapped in any formation and attacking tactics that doesnt frequently utilize the full width of the pitch and nor rely much if any on strong wing n crossing..!!

tbh, he looks a bit of a square peg in round hole in Pothead's system of play..! in his limited feature the other night vs Wolves, he kept wanting to go wide and was hoping for a pass to make an attacking run but then he'd realize that he is expected to come further to middle of the pitch (top of the box) in order to form a passing triangle of sort for 1/2s and useless lateral passing in thick of defensive traffic jam..!

he certainly looked a bit confused in terms of his positioning in and around the opponent's box and uncomfortable with BHA's rather hesitant attacking approach..!

His market value has dramatically dropped.
in all honesty imo, 8-10mil is certainly more in line with his true worth for a player of his overall caliber..!

        ps

those who follow the league, is there any other EPL team who's in emergency need of a winger/attacker reinforcement this winter transfer market..? im certain Ali would jump at the chance of another EPL team loan/swap ...!

None in the prem. Honestly, his position is probably the most competitive in the league it’s almost as if every teams strong points are their wingers, especially with the mid and lower table teams
          Team Meli Iran
          Perspolis FC
          Malavan Bandar Anzali

The responsibilities of the winger include:

Providing a "wide presence" as a passing option on the flank.
To beat the opposing full-back either with skill or with speed.
To read passes from the midfield that give them a clear crossing opportunity, when going wide, or that give them a clear scoring opportunity, when cutting inside towards goal.
To double up on the opposition winger, particularly when he or she is being "double-marked" by both the team's full back and winger.

The prototypical winger is fast, tricky and enjoys 'hugging' the touchline, that is, running downfield close to the touchline and delivering crosses. However, players with different attributes can thrive on the wing as well. Some wingers prefer to cut infield (as opposed to staying wide) and pose a threat as playmakers by playing diagonal passes to forwards or taking a shot at goal. Even players who are not considered quick, have been successfully fielded as wingers at club and international level for their ability to create play from the flank. Occasionally wingers are given a free role to roam across the front line and are relieved of defensive responsibilities.

The Palace match was an education in the role of the winger or not. 1-1, it was a draw with a winger the calibre of Zaha (benchmark). Antonio and Traore are two more wingers of EPL standard, because of recent improvements by both players. Solly March and Alireza Jahanbakhsh will both have to improve to get up to scratch.

why would they have to improve if their is no room for their position in Potters formation?

Potterball has variable formations: one winger or an inverted winger is a viable proposition as well as a second striker, although this role could be combined.

Houghton was a bit of a dinosaur with his rigid 4-4-1-1 with two wingers forced to help out in defence.

Improvement is forced on the Albion winger by the standard of the opposing full backs.

The typical abilities of wingers include:

Technical skill to beat a full-back in a one-to-one situation.
Pace, to beat the full-back one-on-one.
                Crossing ability when out wide.
Good off-the-ball ability when reading a pass from the midfield or from fellow attackers. Finding space.
Good passing ability and composure, to retain possession while in opposition territory.
The modern winger should also be comfortable on either wing so as to adapt to quick tactical changes required by the coach.

just for the stat whores out there...

Brighton with 69% possession today, 82% pass accuracy, at HOME vs sheffield United.

                            Shots on goal :

                            Brighton - 2
                            Sheffield - 2

And a 1-0 loss at home for brighton.

Excellent production from the offensive players that continue to perform light years ahead of ARJ.
