its unpopular opinion because in comparision to the others, ezatolahi is so far and away the best player we have there. Just look at his performances vs Algeria, Russia, Spartak Moscow, Zenit. He plays the role of DM very well, when he has a clearly defined job (sit right on top of CB's, distribute more), etc. Today he was just thrown into a mess, and asked to be part of the mess for 30 minutes essentially.

As much as I would like to see Iran's main line up against Turkey and Greece, I don't think CQ will do it. He will just not show his hand until the first game. Evan if he plays most of the 1st team players he will play them in different position. The only game where he may go full force will be against Lituania which may be behind closed doors...if I am not mistaken.

Another good option for CQ at cdm would have been moharrami. he has played there before with PP, and even tho he isnt physical presence, he has the mobility and technical ability to be decent there. At any rate, better than cheshmi,montazeri,etc. Plus he could have covered in full back positions too. Nourollahi another solid option. But no, we went for dumb and dumber choices in the 35 man squad, and now I am really struggling to figure out somebody who deserves to start alongside hajsafi. The saving grace is, the moron who comes in will only need to be decent for one game, then he can sit his ass on the bench and not be seen again. Just ONE GAME dont play tokhmi, be physical, dont commit fouls, be defensively aware, be fit enough to cover a lot of ground, and just be really simple with the ball (like elneny at arsenal).

The issue is, CDM is such a specialist position, that requires a lot of tactical knowledge as well as physical and technical capabilities, and good awareness of game in general (thinking on pass ahead or multiple on defense and offense). It is not a position that maximizes natural talent but rather requires constant focus from a young age. That is why we have so few in iran. Either they are too slow, too weak, or too tactically retarded to play in this crucial role at an international level. The best we can hope for is somebody who can try to be like hajsafi and just be a bit deeper, then tell hajsafi too ensure that he too is a bit deeper. The only way it works is if dejagah is back, he can settle down the midfield. Ghoddos and Jahanbaksh on wings can also really help in possession bc their style is so european and they know how to keep the ball. Then it will be easier for whoever plays at CDM because they will just have to pass the ball to those guys and they will circulate it, make quick incisive moves.
