    From Tehran Times today

Iran to protest FIFA for using ‘Arabian Gulf Cup’ name
    1. Sports

    January 7, 2023 - 15:15
TEHRAN - The Islamic Republic of Iran Football Federation (IRIFF) will protest FIFA for using the ‘Arabian Gulf Cup’ for the tournament.

The competition kicked off in Basra, Iraq Friday night.

The 25th edition of the biennial football tournament, which runs from Jan. 6 to 19, has brought teams from Iraq, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Yemen together.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the ceremony at the Basra International Stadium.

“It was great to have attended the opening ceremony and the opening game of the 2023 Arabian Gulf Cup in Basra, Iraq between Iraq and Oman,” said the FIFA President.

IRIFF has criticized FIFA for using the name of ‘Arabian Gulf Cup’ for the tournament via a post published on the federation’s website.

“The Persian Gulf is a historical name, which has been applied in all languages and various atlases, including ancient and historical maps,” the statement reads

The loudest people who fiercely either played a role in the cancelation of Canada-Iran friendly match such as Hamed Esmaileon or those who were calling for Team Melli to be banned from 2022 World Cup such as Masih Alinejad, Shiva Amini, Sardar Pashaei, Mahmoud Ebrahimzadeh, Sosha Makani and some others have been very silent regarding defending the sacred name of Persian Gulf, why don't they use their Cyber Army to create and share posts defending Persian Gulf name? Why don't they create petitions for it? Why don't they write to FIFA to complain about a Football tournament using a fake name and ask FIFA to rename the tournament to Persian Gulf Cup?

Arabic wikipedia also uses the fake name on maps!

                Iranians should not sit silent.

                1. Persian is official language of Iran which is an Indo-European language. Persian Gulf is the southern water and the name has been from historical times.

                2. Iranians should write to all foreign companies, organizations, governments asking them to only use Persian Gulf name on all maps and in all oral and written communications. Also ask them to remove Iran from any list titled "Arab World", "Middle East" or "MENA", they all must associate Iran with either "Asia", "West Asia" or "Central Asia". The name Middle East, MENA are outdated, Eurocentric and commonly preferred by Arabs and Israel. Iran is not an Arab country and not a member of Arab Union.

                3. Iran has nothing in common with Arab countries. Iran must always appear in organizations, lists together with Armenia, Republic of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic.

                4. Iranians should ask all their sporting federations to be in Central Asia sub-region.

                5. People from Tajikistan and Afghanistan, native Persian speakers from Uzbekistan, Pakistan, China, India, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman should all defend the name Persian Gulf and ask FIFA to ensure that the Arab countries use the correct name "Persian Gulf Cup" for their football tournament, as well on maps.

When Arab nationalism suffered defeat in the 6 day war against Isreal in 1967, Jamal Abdul Nasser the president of Egypt at the time and the father of Pan-Arabism switched its focus on Iran and called Iran the biggest enemy of Arabs and Islam. He started various policies and plots against our nation including using the name Arabian Gulf and calling for independence of Khuzestan among others.

Unfortunforty we have been silent against these Arab aggressions for centuries. During the Shah's regime a policy of peace and friendship with arab states prevented a strong and decisive answer to be given to those plotting against our nation, although the show of military silenced Saddam Hossain a follower of Naser Pan Arabism at least for a while. The Mullah regime on the surface objects to such acts by Arabs but their standing in the community of nations is so low, nobody takes anything they say seriously. And we all know deep down this brutal and terrorist regime does not care about Iran and Irani. They have been auctioning off our nation in any way they can.

That being said, seeing FIFA who is the advocate of separating politics from sports getting in the middle of this Arab game is surprising and a clear sign of disrespecting and violating the sovergnity of our nation.

There is only one explanation for this money hungry Infantino and that is he is trying to please his masters to ensure the pot of gold he found in oil rich arab land continues to fund FiFA.

Should we sit quiet? Absloulty not! We have to use the power of media to educate the world about what is happening. We have to protest against FIFA. I request our PDFC editors to write an article (in a respectful language) and post it on front page to unfold FiFA's attempt.

Iran is not an arab country or has nothing in common with arab countries : most Iranians have arab first name and even arab family names, have plenty of Arabic names in persian languages, use the Arabic alphabet, have the same religion, religion which have a big place in iranian life.. With all this how to expect to convince the world we are not arab??

You can hate me for this, but right now as an Iranian I have much bigger concerns for my country, than a name. Not that I don't care about it, but these Arabs will never change, as they know how to push our buttons.

Theoretically, you are right but since you use Arabic script means nothing. The small tribe from Yemen have imposed their script, culture and religion in many regions during the years. I know you don't like this but Iran is an Islamic Republic for the moment. When this will change we can talk about Iran not having nothing in common with Arabs. Japanese use Chinese characters. Koreans used them, but created their own Hangul. Romania used Cyrillic, but now use Latin Alphabet. Iran can use Old Persian script, but the question is: those in power of Iran want this?

I understand the outrage regarding this topic. I will always refer to our waters as Persian Gulf and the historic name will always be Persian Gulf but I don‘t really mind our arab neighbors calling it Arab Gulf since they also live by those shores.

I'm sure the Mexico would take offense if the Gulf of Mexico was suddenly referred to as the Gulf of USA. Similarly, China would not be happy of the South China Sea was referred to South Taiwan Sea.

Erasure of historical names (often for political purposes) is a common thread in human history. It is done to erase a prior ethnicity/culture/nationality. Hence the outrage. We have to keep our Persian/Iranian identity intact, or it will be eroded by those around us.
