Iran only didn't make the World Cup back to back twice, in 2002 and 2010. So I'm not sure why some people are talking about it like its a trend or pattern. It's kind of sad to see threads like this when these results literally happen all the time to even stronger teams. I would rather try new young players and just barely make the next round then play the oldies and destroy everyone.

I heard this tournament is a joint-qualification for both the WC in Russia and Asian Cup in UAE, so if that is the case, IF we don't come on top of the group, we are basically eliminated from both future tournaments. Any comments on this?

No 4/8 second place teams make the next round which automatically qualifies them for ac 2019. THe 24 other teams make an asian cup qualification round only the worst 4 teams are eliminated.

I'm with OP on this one. We have many new players whom have to gain experience, but with Jahanbakhsh, Azmoun, Pouraliganji, Sharifi, Ezatollahi and Beiranvand the future is looking bright guys.

First 2 teams advance automatically to AC, the next 3 are put into an additional round to play only for AFC qualifying, so technically we're almost guaranteed to go to AC regardless.

WCQ shouldn't be hard either. We have 5 home games left and 2 away. We should beat Guam(twice), turkeministan(once) , india(twice), and itll be enough to draw Oman twice, to qualify to the next round as either group leader or second. Frankly if we lose points in any one of the five home games, forget WC.

well aside from 1978....we made it in 1998, failed to in 2002, made in 2006, and failed to in 2010, then made it in 2014...do you see the pattern?

We should not be talking about drawing any of these teams. Max points in all remaining games is a must and realistic if we play with the best available lineup. Oman is not half the team it used to be, and if we go in for any kind of a draw the result can hurt us more. Go for the win, build first team chemistry, and boost overall TM confidence.

Home games? If we get anything less than wins in all 7 remaining games, or at worse win 6 and draw Oman away, then forget the WC.

TM better catch up after that pathetic opening performance with 7 comfortable wins, nothing less should be expected.

There won't be any team chemistry if CQ keeps constantly being negative. That shit rubs off on the players. He is constantly grumpy, in a bad mood and talks smack about how players are not good etc.

Ya I agree...CQ is very angry and its always his way or the highway....

To delusional fans. CQ is at the dead end. He is a great scouting agent but not a tactician. He is better than all Iranian coaches but we need a better coach if we want to develop our football. CQ showed us how to defend, train and organize a team but he is not good in planing different tactics in the field and he avoid technically gifted players for physically stronger ones this shows why we have Hashem Beikzadeh and Heydari in our team and not the likes of Khalat bari, Nariman Jahan, or Sadeghian (only technically wise not his behavior)... He gave up on creativity and play making to have a stronger defense.
