Hazfi Cup Champion with Zob Ahan
    IRI = FAILED

Why should good Iranian GKs (like Lak) sit out while these useless foreigners play for them? Banning foreign GKs was a good think in my opinion.

I remember. He was the best GK of the IPL. The guy was a beast. Korbekandi always found good GKs as he was a GK himself. He even went to 1978 World Cup in Argentina.

well said. I remember when he left zob ahan they were worried because they had nobody good to replace him, then shahab gordan was given an opportunity and impressed big time. but ndoye was surely one of the better GKs at the time, good foreign players especially keepers raise the level of competition in iran. we see far less sooti's now that we don't have as many amateur GKs in our league. glad this stupid ban was removed.

Yes you are right there are far less "goal Ilici" in our league now.

Just remember that it was during this foreign goalkeeper ban that we saw a rise in our domestic GKs.
Rahmati, Haghighi, Forouzan, Makani, Gordan, Ahmadi, Sadeghi, Lak etc.
God knows how many of these would get overlooked and placed on the bench over a foreign GK.

And as you saw when the ban was lifted, GKs like Shahab Gordan and Alireza Haghighi had to go sit on the bench while some 40 year old Brazilian got playing time.

Now Hamed Lak has to sit on the bench (or wherever he is) while some wash up African guy gets scored on "Ilic Style" left and right.

That "40 year old Brazilian" turned out to be the best and most consistent + disciplined GK of our league. Actually he was meant to be the reserve keeper, but he quickly conquered the GK spot since Gordan, Haghighi and many other GK's collapsed under the pressure/hashyie.

There is no problem with adding foreign players to the league, but they have to be at least one class above the rest in order to raise the level and create more competition. Other than that, I totally agree - we should rather give playing time to our own youngsters. Only in Iran you see someone like Ndoye being immediately used as #1 despite being totally out of form. It hurts to see another talent like Lak is being wasted.

Also bringing in solid foreign goalkeepers not only increases competition for domestic players.. it may actually force them to move out to Europe like Alireza Haghighi and not fall into this artificial comfort zone

Nilson was without doubt the BEST GK we have EVER had in IPL.

He did make some major blunders that cost PP a hazfi cup title and an IPL title. Also, Nilson shouldn't be the representative for foreign GKs in Iran. Most of the one that came to Iran were total garbage.

The GK position is different from field players. Coaches usually just pick one GK and not change him throughout the season. It's not good for TM and Iranian player development to have GKs go to waste on the bench while some foreigner gets playing time and experience.

Stronger league can only help our football. If Nilson made our league stronger, which he did, he should play. Maybe it will put another good goalie on the bench, but it will force other younger goalies to be even BETTER if they want to play ahead of Nilson and other good foreigners.

That's the typical pro-foreign player argument. They make the same argument over and over again in regard to foreign players in the EPL (English Premier League). Look at the English league (arguably the best in the world). It's packed with foreigners which means English players are not getting playing time, experience, and development. Just look at the English national team. Does the England national team really reflect the true potential of English football? Does a strong league built around foreign players help the national team?

In my opinion there needs to be close monitoring of foreign players in any domestic league. No wash ups and trash should be allowed. Only players that will raise the level of the league.

One good way of doing this is only allowing foreign players that are 1) nationally capped or 2) played significant minutes in a top division 1 European / Brazilian league.

We are not the English league. AND we do not have the huge number of foreign players the English league has. We have a few (if even) foreigners on each team.

If we go by your criteria, we would have never had:

                          1) Fabio Januario 2) Ibrahim Toure 3) Founeke Sy 4) Ivan Petrovic 5) Bruno Cesar 6) Xhevahir Sukaj 7) Nilson 8) Igor Castro 9) Samuel 10) Edinho

                          11) Perriera

Those are just off the top of my head to be honest. All those guys were very instrumental for their teams. Guys like Cesar and Founeke were poached by the big money arab leagues, but they were still the best players on their team. Zob Ahan was not in the ACL final without Igor Castro. Fabio Januario arguably opened the door for more Brazilians like Edinho and Perriera to come over.

I agree that our clubs shouldnt buy foreign players just for the sake of having a foreign player. However EPL is a completely different story. The use of foreign players is way higher in that league.
