We actually played very well. Created lots of chances. Even after the red card we really managed the game well.
    However we can't finish.

Now for the main reason we suffered so much this game.
Playing with your heart versus playing with you brain.
No coach can fix that issue at this level. GN can't fix that. At best you can band-aid it by playing ultra defensive and setting up a way to minimize error (at the cost of any attacking play).
GN can't fix it that Cheshmi caused 2 very bad turnovers. GN can't fix that Beiranvand tackled that Syrian player poorly. GN can't control that Taremi is still diving. These are grassroots issues and most of our players don't have the benefit of good academic learning that way. Not to mention culturally we are an emotional and sometimes histrionic people.

Go back and look at that game - it wasn't as bad as some of you make it out to be.

Beiranvand - 5/10. Giving him a poor score due to the penalty he caused.
Ramin - 5.5/10. Didn't read the game well. Lots of errors. poor crosses.
Shoja - 7.5/10. I'd give him higher but he's way too hotheaded. He's athletic and fast considering his age. Put his body on the line.
Cheshmi - 4/10 - gave away 2 chances. First penatly was started by his messup. Taremi's second yellow was also because he went up too high and no one was able to get the Syrian player on his counter except him. Cheshmi exposed the team to crtiical errors. A CB cannot do that.
Hajisafi - 8/10. He was excellent. Great distribution. Calm. Collected. As mentioned, against slow teams Hajisafi is excellent!
Ghodoos - 6.5/10 - not great, not bad. Didn't deserve to be subbed out.
Ezatollahi - 7/10 - solid play. Yeah he's physical but so was Syria. good distribution. Also got us out of some bad defensive mistakes when playing out of the back.
JB - 7.5/10 - Lots of balls won in the middle, good key passes. Could have played more. Damesh garm. His best game in a while.
Ghaedi - 6.5/10. Stops attacks with his static play. Doesn't open up and look for combo plays. Gets outmuscled. Not suitable to play against Syria. Might be ok versus Japan.
Taremi - 6/10. - first yellow was stupid. Second yellow he had no choice. No one got back to stop the Syrian counter except for him. Without his brainfart I would have given him a 7.5. Did great to draw the penalty. Lots of good combo play
Azmoun - 3.5/10 - YOu can't mess that many chances up at this level. Maybe he's thinking too much of the game or not enough.

Karim - 6.5/10 - really helped the team keep shape. Yeah he's slow, but he at least knows where to run in a 10 man situation.
Gholi - 6.5/10 - great to soak up pressure and slow down play. Needs to be more clinical.
Ebrahimi - 7.5/10 - Was really good. Won the ball. Distributed well. Ran well. Just like Hajisafi he is good against slow teams.
Mohebi - 3/10/ - did nothing good. Bad touches. Runs away from space. Can't beat a man. Really bad. Should not play. Azizi is right.
Basijboy - N/A. Was put on for penalties. Cold-blooded. I get the guy isn't popular, but GN should let him play. He's composed, defends well and adds speed to our slow midfield.

Penalties - Happy we finally got over the TM penalties curse. Those were clinical finishes. For a minute I thought Germany was taking the penalties.
Nokhodi, pretty level headed take on the game and agree with the majority.

I disagree with GN picking the right team though. IMO Ghaedi should not have started this game, not saying Mohebbi should've started but he should've thought of another way to go about this.

Taremi could have let the guy run with the ball, it was still relatively wide. It was a rush of blood to the head, and the dive I don't even want to address!
you can't do anything about the length of your life, but you can do something about its width and depth

I agree that the lineup was poor too. He picks the wrong players for the tactics he employs.

Us beating Japan is purely dependent on Azmoun. Taremi is out, there will be less link up play. He will be served more crosses form the wings agaisnt the shorter Japan team. He needs to step up

cheshmi is a liability in CB and CDM, wow the guy is awful

Roozbeh , Ghayedi , Mohebi , ARJ were all mistakes .

          rest of them below average.

By the way how many games will taremi miss?

            The good: Shoja, Hajsafi, Omid
            Bad: Cheshmi, Beiro, Mohebbi
            Ugly: GN

When it comes to the rest of the the team, they did ok. Syria was dangerous on 2 occasions-> 1 goal, 1 ejection. Our main issues were in front of our own and our opponents goal.
Our goal: Should get better with Kanani and maybe Majid back. Cheshmi is only our no 4 cb. Beiro will remain a liability though.
Sardar will be a key point. With Taremi out, it s him or nobody up front. Even today, despite he fucked up he was the main danger in front of Syrias goal
GN needs to work on him and build him up as he is a sensitive player. And this will be the main issue as he even started critisizing players indirectly in his interview...

"This is a totalitarian system whose presence people feel in their blood and in their flesh on a daily basis. And it’s one that does not grant freedoms of any kind, or accommodate people’s demands in any way. What is increasingly clear is that there is clear demand for change in the regime. What the people want is regime change, and no return to the past. There is a very real possibility of regime change." - Nasrin Sotoudeh

Will he want to share it this time, given the grief he got for Syria game?

as far as i'm aware they stand, and only get wiped after the quarters, however if shoja or ezza get booked in the QF, they miss the semi.

Those were the greatest 5 penalties I have ever seen. THIS is what I meant by just taking strong power shots, no stupid run ups or little dances and tricks

Best five penalties I've ever seen from TM

Penalties always scare the shit out of me based on past TM traumas - the confidence of these ones was amazing

lol knowing General and his trauma, he probably spent all the training on practising penalties and zero tactics - The pens were all top notch!

                              Post match interviews:

Omid Ebrahimi: the team discussed on the field that we will do this in Taremi's honor. We won't get scored on and we'll get to penalties

Ramin: We made the match difficult for ourselves. Syria was still afraid of TM even with 10 men.

Beiro: It was a difficult match.

In a few years we will revisit this match and appreciate the absolute will power and mental strength these guys showed in those 40+ minutes playing with 10 men and those absolutely incredible penalties. Awesome tbat we took the penalties at our end of field too, not opponent ened
