Both teams will begin their World Cup / Asian Cup qualifying campaign with away matches on June 16, and are free to play a friendly in the FIFA matchday phase starting from June 8 beforehand.

The match is supposed to take place in Instanbul, Turkey, which lies on the route of the Iranian national team on the way to Turkmenistan, where they will begin their Russia 2018 campaign.

Besides Uzbekistan, Iran are rumoured to face Japan and Bahrain in further friendlies this year.

Iran has been grouped with Oman, India, Turkmenistan and Guam for the first round of World Cup qualifying, which also serves as Asian Cup qualifying.
