Tasnim – RIYADH, Iran’s Esteghlal football team was eliminated from the AFC Champions League after a 2-1 defeat against Al Shabab of Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

Iran’s giant blues needed a win to keep alive its hopes of reaching the knock-out stage in Group A. The Iranian outfit took the lead with a diving header by Pejman Nouri early in the second half at the King Fahd International Stadium.

With eight minute remaining, Fernando Menegazzo equalized the match from the penalty spot.

In the dying moments of the match, Saeed Al Dossari made it 2-1 for the host and Al Shabab moved top of the group with 12 points.

Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates beat Qatari side Al Rayyan 3-2 in the group and bagged 10 points.

Esteghlal and Al Rayyan were knocked out from the group stage with four and three points respectively.
