Belarus to face Iran in football friendly in May

BelTA – MINSK, The association Belarusian Football Federation has reached an agreement to hold a friendly match against the national team of Iran in Austria on 18 May, BelTA has learnt.

This will be the third time Belarus and Iran have met. On 20 August 2003 Belarus, under head coach Anatoly Baidachnyi, encountered Iran in Minsk to win 2:1, Maksim Romashchenko scoring from 11 meters on 9 minutes and Sergei Shtanyuk adding a second in the 40th minute. The second match in Tehran on 7 February 2007 ended in a draw 2-2. Back then, Vyacheslav Hleb scored twice within six minutes, on 53 and 59 minutes. The Belarusian team were then coached by Yuri Puntus.

Belarus are 82nd in the February edition of the FIFA ranking, while Iranians are 38th. Belarus will encounter Bulgaria in another friendly match in Sofia on 5 March. Bulgaria are currently 72nd in the FIFA ranking.
