Karimi decided to hang up his boots in May 2013 after Persepolis was defeated by Sepahan in the final of Iran’s Hazfi Cup. However, the 35-year-old midfielder later changed his mind and said he had no plan to end his career.

“Ali Karimi could return to the national team,” Queiroz told Radio Javan.
