I also think it's disrespectful to Croatians to react that way. Some people may pronounce your name the way you like it and some may pronounce it the way Croatians pronounce your name. If you don't like it then change your last name. Don't forget about your roots.

As an Iranian-American i gotta say i have mixed feelings. This country has given me so much so obviously it would be wrong to bash the national team. BUT there is just so much arrogance, lack of appreciation for football, easy-to-access resources...Football (soccer, whatever) is very much a upper middle-class/wealthy sport in the US. It has no grassroots/urban origins, you don't go to the projects of detroit or Queens and see kids kicking a torn up ball around the same way you'd see things in Tehran. You see them balling or playing american football. Football is a sentimental sport, it is a testament to people come up from difficult places and bringing joy to their countrymen, wearing a national team shirt with pride and dreaming of the day they can wearing since childhood. I don't feel that at all when watching the US. The development system is ass-backwards, Klinsmann himself said that if you're getting half of your professional players at the age of 22 you are getting them at a time when most in Europe would have already seen 4-5 years of top flight football. So, while it is sad that USMNT cant go to Russia in 2018, i feel a bit of a "good riddance" inside of me. A spot at the World Cup is a cherished achievement, and most American's couldn't even give half a shit about it OR they just take it for granted. Maybe now there will be some reform or a cultural shift...

On top of this, i am so glad that the people of Panama and Honduras have the incredible joy of watch their national teams make it on the big stage (assuming the aussies get knocked out). I've done medical missions to many central american countries and the poverty and under-development is just unfathomable. Brings a smile to my face to think that those kids playing in those dirt streets of rural Honduras with a beat-up ball can having something big to be cheerful about.

Besides, my heart has and always will be with Team Melli.
