I read somewhere that they simply ran out of fuel towards the end of the flight. The plane's range was shorter than the distance they had intended to cover even on a full tank at take-off. https://youtu.be/Yzkzl6rob6Q

The pilot had in his flight plan to stop earlier at Bogota to refuel but decided to take the risk and avoid extra costs (pilot was the owner of the plane). Once close to the airport he signaled a lack of fuel to the controller, who had to prioritize other planes as there was high traffic. The pilot only signaled an emergency fuel condition way way too late for some reason when he was about to completely run out of it, at that point the controller gave him immediate permission to land but it was too late...
Keep in mind that if he declared emergency, there was going to be an inspection of the plane after landing and a certain fine as well which again seems to show that the pilot wanted to risk to avoid those costs...
What an idiot really, the pilot's stupidity and greed cost the lives of 76 people and families.
