Iran in Davis cup tournament

Iran will host the davis group tournament (Asia/Oceania III) in Enghelab staidum in Tehran (11-16 june). Those who are in Iran, please go and support them!

I tend to disagree. Yes a lot of them like partying, but there are at least as many who are interested in sports + actually dedicate themselves in a sport.

Let's hope they go and support. It is a disgrace. Iran used to be one of Asia's finest in Tennis and now one of the middle ranked asian teams!

That's because the shah was personally dedicated in tennis.

After the revolution, tennis pretty much disappeared from the scene because it was seen as ''western'' and upper class privilege. In other words, it was seen as unislamic.

The fact that Iran is organizing a Davis Cup tournament surprises me.

Actually Iran always host Davis Cup when they are in Group C. they usually win the Group and advance, then next year they lose in Group B and come back to this group !

last year Iran hosted Kuwait in Group B (lost narrowly) and one of the matches went to 1-2 am after the midnight and there were still hundreds of people cheering for them. Tennis has its fans in Iran and they always go and support the team. and Iranian players usually play their heart out in Davis Cup, they are just not that good talent-wise.

It was actually banned all throughout Iran-Iraq war period, that's why Bahrami left Iran and went to France. When the ban was removed, it was when Agassi was becoming a shinning star, Lendl and Becker were in their prime. One summer my dad had enrolled me and my brother in Tennis class at Mashhad University, the coach didn't care about me, my brother and another guy as we were all young, he only concentrated on the 16-17 years old, thus didn't learn a thing. Our coach actually cut our rackets and made them shorter for three of us as he thought rackets were too big for us

Arghavan Rezaei never played for Iran, she was representing France. but Mansour Bahrami yes. he even played a grand slam doubles final.

we had more players in Grand slams long time ago. Mohammad Hossein Akbari and Taghi Akbari came to my mind. not sure if there are more.

I think she played for Iran in Asian games of something like that. Andre Agassi has an iranian father aswell.

I wonder if Iran has a young talented player that could become professional. A big range of "non tennis" countries are producing some good players now : Bosnia, Uzbekistan, Greece, Tunisia etc..
