Ivic was between Vieira and Talebi. He took over with only 6 months before WC and the things he pushed our federation to do resulted in a world cup which was so much better than I or anyone expected.

That's the only point I keep trying (and clearly failing...) to make here- it's not too late for an experienced and charismatic coach with ambitions, who can battle a bit with the governing bodies, to take this team and do something so that the WC is better than we are currently expecting. I can't compare Japan and Iran situation because the countries have such opposite infrastructures.

But 98 could have gone so different. Imagine the team had stability with Ivic in the WC. Talebi did zero. In the Yugo match I believe he only made 1 sub. Who in their right mind is gonna come in and put effort in Skocic has thus far.

It's like we all predicted...if Sko used this match to experiment with a lineup he was dammed if he lost. If he won we would all say meaningless game. Poor guy is stuck between a rock and a hard place for just 1 match!

In the newspapers the predictions were for a complete mauling from all three teams. UK Sunday times predicted 4-0, 4-0, 3-0

Yugoslavia's team in 1998 was a lot better than either Mexico or Portugal in 2006 and was just full of world class players at their peak, whether Real Madrid's star or one of the best in AC Milan's history. They never will have such a good team again.

Iran had a surprising number of chances during the game.

Ivic had built something in a short space of time and all Talebi had to do was not wreck it within the WC. And it was fine, Iran came home doing much better than anyone expected.

Right so Ivic, Viera, then Talebi. So Talebi couldn't improve on his predecessors...we expect someone to come and improve on Skocic...imagine if we had Ivic or Veira as coach in 98...who knows.

Sorry Talebi was a disaster. He was clueless. To this day he says Iran deserved a PK against USA due to foul on Azizi by Keller in the box but I'm glad the ref didn't call it for political reasons...lol wtf kinda coach is that?

Talebi absorbed nothing. He was a yes man and had the luxury of massive talent in his side. If it wasn't for Abedzadeh heroics USA match was lost in first half. It was literally park the bus against Yugo and try not to get hammered by Germany...no tactics no plan...

What’s your beef with strama? He had SS playing by far the best footy they have in recent years and also is great at creating strong atmospheres in the team. I remember you had thought he wouldn’t do well when SS appointed him and he came in and got great results especially for the situation they were in…..he would be a big step up from Skocic.

What great results ? He started fussing over money and abandoned the team in November and officially left on December. Once he left they got up to 3rd and 2nd.

My issues with him (especially for TM) is that he’s overrated, expensive, sensitive and didn’t perform better than Iranian coaches.

I think we would all agree that he’s a good coach but they’re throwing his name out to get people to think positively of Skocic being fired - and then they’ll switch his name with someone much worse!

I like Nekounam, but for those of you complaining about lack of youth and old players… he will be even worse than Skocic on that front. Look at his foolad team.
