He just came back from a major injury and just got two sub appearances since then (last two games they've played). He looked good though!

They have an important game tomorrow which I will post live link in the other thread. They are just a couple points back behind Schalke.

We need him to score some goals now. Leverkusen are struggling to score and they will need goals to secure the 3rd place. They have some intense games the next few weeks

Who provides the Wirtz inspiration? Seoane's little hope for Azmoun

Whether Sardar Azmoun will be able to stretch again at the weekend is still open.

Since Florian Wirtz tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the derby against 1. FC Köln (0:1), Baye's goal curve has clearly gone down. Including the lost duel between neighbors, the Werkself have only scored four goals in five competitive games. An extremely meager yield for the third-placed team, who had previously scored the second most accurate offensive in the league with 64 goals. Only FC Bayern Munich, with 76 goals, ranked ahead of Bayer 04, who had scored 13 more goals than RB Leipzig.

The Saxons, who will play in Leverkusen on Sunday (7.30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker), are currently only four behind the Seoane team with 64 goals scored. Bayer's offensive power is no longer the same as before without the 18-year-old idea generator and executor. Of course, in these low-scoring games without Wirtz, top scorer Patrik Schick was largely absent. But the Czech, with 20 goals in 22 appearances Bayer goal guarantee, has to get going again. In Bochum, the center forward only had one chance to score at the start when he didn't hit the ball fully, and overall few actions.

Wirtz cannot be replaced on an equal footing

This can be explained not only by the fact that the Werkself are much more defensive in terms of personnel due to many absentees, but also by the absence of Wirtz, who is still Bayer's best preparer with eleven assists and was also the initiator of many opportunities with ten penultimate passes. The question is: how can the Werkself even begin to compensate for his absence? The creative player obviously cannot be replaced on an equal footing.

On paper, Gerardo Seoane has three options: Sardar Azmoun, Kerem Demirbay and Paulinho. Whereby the latter is practically absent as a ten in the 4-2-3-1. After the absence of Karim Bellarabi (torn hamstring), the Leverkusen coach only has Paulinho and Moussa Diaby as wingers. Strategist Demirbay, who remained pale in the Wirtz position in Bochum, usually comes into its own from the lower position on the double six. So now Azmoun would be in demand, who would come closest to Wirtz's playing style in terms of his profile.

However, the Iranian national striker is still looking for his form and the last fitness. This was clearly noticeable when Winter Purchasing made its first start in Wolfsburg three and a half weeks ago. Is he now ready to show a lot more of his class than he was able to do at Leverkusen? Probably not really. The striker, who - like Wirtz - can work well around a central striker, was again absent due to an infection in the 0-0 draw in Bochum on Sunday. He took antibiotics until Tuesday and was back on the training ground for the first time on Wednesday.

Azmoun's illness came 'really inconveniently' for Seoane

Gerardo Seoane has tried to get Azmoun into the rhythm of the game in the past few weeks with partial bets. A project that was thwarted. "The illness now came really inconveniently," explains the coach, who still has a small hope for Azmoun as a joker.

One thing is clear: The Iranian, who had not practiced competitive sports for about two months from mid-December due to an injury, vacation during his time at Zenit St. Petersburg and a COVID-19 infection, is not ready for 90 minutes. As a result, his deficit is still significant: "I think he needs more time to be at 100 percent, that he will ultimately need a lot of preparation to get to his top level," says Seoane.

He can help us immediately with a single action because he simply has the instinct.

                        Gerardo Seoane on Sardar Azmoun

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old could still be a factor for Bayer this season. "He can help us immediately in a single action because he simply has the feeling. In his three or four appearances he has had five to ten chances. He has a nose, he knows the routes, he has a feeling for them Teammate, also has technical qualities," praises the coach, who also knows: "In Wolfsburg, his tank was empty after an hour. But you could also see that in the first 60 minutes he wasn't as explosive as you would expect ."

Under these conditions, Seoane plans the attacker, who can also play around a classic nine like Patrik Schick or Lucas Alario, as a joker. Leverkusen's coach explains: "In the last half hour, when the rooms get a little bigger, I have hope that he can help us with his offensive qualities in this phase." And so that Bayer can at least provide some of the inspiration missing due to Wirtz's failure.

The coach keeps preaching patience and reiterating that he is fully aware of azmoun's qualities, meanwhile people here keep saying azmoun is gonna be sent back to russia. who to believe I wonder.

He needs to kick it into high gear as soon as possible of course, getting on scoresheet will help, but its a more medium-term evolution. The setbacks he faced with injury, covid, illness, coming off winter break, etc were not minor. It takes time to rebuild his natural explosiveness.

Key is for him to be in peak form by WC, and start contributing in these last 5 games to ensure leverkusen clinch critical CL for next season.

The fact he is already linking up well with his team mates and seems to have settled in well along with getting into goalscoring positions means that I have no worries at all about him. The goals will come.

i'm honestly worried sardar has lost his legs forever. his starts were sick and had that unnatural speed that few players have the first 5-15meters, i pray to god he can find it again soon.

Seoane says about the fitness of his new winter signing: "The player still needs time to be at 100 percent. He needs a whole preparation over four, five weeks and also with friendlies to get to the top level.”
But Seoane is totally convinced of Azmoun: “He can help us with a single action. You can tell - he's got the nose, he knows the routes, senses the teammates, and also has technical qualities. But you could see in the 2-0 win in Wolfsburg that the tank was empty after an hour. He didn't have the explosiveness that was expected of him. That's why we tried to build it up with the rhythm of the game, sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes 60 minutes."
Very high praise from his manager.
