For qualification, Younes Akbarpour and Jalali were two LB and Ahmadi was backup in extended list, All 3 are U21 and expected to be in Hangzhou list ot Asian U23 championship list.
While both Jalali and Akbarpour are technical and fancy ffeet, Akbarpour has been mostly a winger. Originally from Shiraz he has played for Y salpa and now Mes Rafsanjani. His good performance against Persepolis last year earned him U23 invitation.

Too Good to Be Ignored:


According to Mohammadi, he has submitted list of 60 U21 players to iranian olympic committee for Hangzhou games in September and there will be another shorter list for next training on March 17 for Asian U23 games in June. During 3 days of March 17-20 new prospects and those who missed last October training (list of 66) will be observed.

Last time few key U23 players for various reasonds missed training hence final list:

Houshmand & Hosseini: Their club Aluminium prevent them
Janmaleki & Shahabbasi : Injuries excuses,
Hosseinzadeh, Koushki , Sharifi : Agreements with their clubs they were needed by their clubs.
MH Fallah & Sabetimani : simply missed and not invited.

Some of them are needed for June games and hopefully will be included.

There used to be a time when we had a number of players in u23 squad who could easily take the step up for senior squad.

Apart from our amazing u17 performance, the junior teams have globally deteriorated compared to 15 or 25 years ago

Dubai cup to start on March 20, Unfortunately Iran U23 is not part of it.
All Iran can do is to watch may be learn from it.

Both Uzbekistan and Qatar will play, and hopefully Iranian coaches can monitor their games.
Uzbekistan will play Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar will play Thailand and Japan.
They may have more games if they advance.

International Football Tournament in Dubai from 20 – 29 March 2022.
10 teams join the tournament: UAE,China,Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Croatia, Japan, Vietnam, Iraq, Qatar and Thailand.



FORMAT :
Each team will play 3 matches in 2 rounds.
Round 1 (2 matches)
Match day 1 : 23 March
Match day 2 : 26 March
After Round 1, The teams were ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, the following criteria would be used to determine the ranking:
1. Goal difference.
2. Goals scored.
3. Fair play points.
Round 2: (1 match on 29 March)
Based on the rankings in round 1 to assign pairs in round 2:
Team 1 vs Team 2
Team 3 vs Team 4
Team 5 vs Team 6
Team 7 vs Team 8
Team 9 vs Team 10
All matches will be held in 3 stadiums :

This is a tragedy for Iranian Football when a neighboring country EXCLUDES a Football Power house like Iran from such a Tournament ! Its Akin to Serbia hosting a Football cup and they Exclude Italy!! This is IFF incompetence to the MAX!

^ The preparation probably started a few months ago and responsibility should go to Azizi Khadem who seems to have been more about show than go when it came to youth teams. This is sad. Hopefully the new IFF leadership learns and moves forward.

^ Now this one is understandable since TM has the last two qualification games around the same time and none of the participants are in the running for WC 2022. Not participating in U23 tournament in Dubai is not justifiable though and is due to mismanagement of IFF.

بازی های قهرمانی زیر ۲۳ سال آسیا با حضور ۱۶ تیم در تاشکند برگزار می شود و از آنجایی که بیشتر شاگردان مهدی مهدوی کیا در تیم های دسته اولی و لیگ برتری توپ می زنند مهدی مهدوی کیا چاره ای ندارد تمرینات آماده سازی تیم امید را در روزهای فیفا برگزار کند.

Uzbekistan U23 has done well during past AFC U23 games for a good reason.
Most of their players are member of FC Olympic one of Uzbekistan supper league club.
For major tournament best U22 players from the league will join Olympic Fc.
Their strength is their TeamWorks, but they have young talented players as well.

Among their talented players 3 candidates for best young players in super league 2021.

Yasin Salmani, Saman Falah, Omid Hamed far, Koushki.... all have injuries but unfortunately they started to play early and that will delay recovery.
Yasin wants to play and not miss TM invitation but that may not be his best decision.

As predicted there is no "main training at the end of the league".

U23 manager Mohammadi said the following in his latest Tv interview yesterday:

1*-Mahdavi Kia will come to Iran next week.
2*-His assistants in Iran are monitoring U23 league.
3*-There will be 3 days training on March 17-18-19 and on March 22-29.
4*- There will be third training on April 8-14.
5*-He find out league will end on April28-29 the day they will go to Tashkent and no time for final training.


1-Just same as qualification Mahdavi Kia will arrive a day before training. He has not been in Iran since October last year.
2- Since both his assistants Lamers and Shadidi are not in Iran yet, and GK & Fitness coach has not been appointed yet ,Who are his assistants monitoring U23 games? Perhaps as usual his friends and crew from his academy ( last time he had 2 of them).That is a pathetic way to manage a U23 national team.
3-Mohammadi mentioned 2 training camp but failed to mention a promised game after end of march training with Iraq. UAE,...
4-Third training session on April 8-14 coincides with ACL games and Hazfi cup games. Foulad and Sepahan will be in Saudi Arabia and there are Hazfi cup on April 9,10,11, 17,18 because of that it will be without main players.
5-It is sad that they now realize there won't have enough time o have their final training .

Mahdavi kia 's U23 preparation has been so far nonexistent and what they have plan are not sufficient for championship phase.
Base on Mahdavi Kia 's plan after April 14 to May 29 there won't be any U23 training and assembly.

Four U23 players scored this week (W22), Hosseinzadeh ( Esteghlal ), Khodabandelo ( Zobahan), Behzad Salami (Tractor) & Sina Shahabbasi (Foulad).

Sina was invited last time by Mahdavikia but he did not show up (injury excuse). Shahabbasi just like Janmaleki and Nasiri consistantly play for their clubs and are dependable defenders but last time none of them were selected in final list.

Sina moved from Damash 2 years ago to Foulad and one of the lucky one with two championships.
