Semak's team is highly 1dimentional tactically .... and then when he tries to adopt a more conservative approach against challenging CL opponents , he often ends up more confusing his players and they often end up looking clueless and completely toothless all over the pitch...!
Semak should at least have the balls to play his own brand of mostly attacking football no matter who they are facing ...a la SC at Porto..!!
but then he also lacks that passionate leadership of SC in order to pump up his players' Psychee and to give them the maximum pre-game confidence required to perform well above their usual levels , come big match days in CL..! Instead most often Semak further kills his players' confidence by forcing them to adhere to an unfamiliar, overly cautious approach and ends up losing the game anyhow , be it rather on a close scoreline of late vs the Giants of his CL Group..!
i think having lost a couple of close key fixtures closely so far in CL (especially this last home game vs Juve) and with Europa well within their grasp, he may now throw caution to air and line up his usual attacking 442 in the remaining group matches and see if his team can make a surprise advancement into 1/4 finals..??

its not something you just switch on and off. It is bc zenit as a football club (particularly last 10 years or so) lacks identity. It is actually just a money laundering scheme for gazprom, bunch of corrupt officials like medvedev or alexei miller rotate in and out every couple years. The crappy culture runs deep.

Their big successes were bc of old school russian generation, likes of anyukov, kerzhakov, arshavin, mixed with some other eastern europeans. Thats when they won the EL.

Thats on a club level. On a coach level semak may be the least inspiring one I have seen. He does not charge the players right for crucial, winnable CL games. He chooses tactics that as BL mention confuse the hell out of everybody, and in the end they look pathetic.

If at home vs Juve he played Sardar and Dzyuba with claudinho behind them they would have really offered a threat and gave juve something to think about. Instead they died a slow death and gave up their CL hopes there too.

dont think some realize just how good his overall CF play is. He shows it all here.

1. Excellent realization of space opening between mid line and defense, quickly darts into it before defender even has chance to block him off.

2. Great hold up play. Guy has 2 arms on him, pushes him, kicks him 2x. He could have gone down for foul but has the physical capability to hold him off and take a strong first touch and turn.

3. Good technical skill in tight spaces, speed to take on another guy and beat him.

4. Now he shows great awareness and knows exactly where wendel is for cutback.

5. Perfect execution to put it right into his path, guy basically just has to hit target and its a goal.
