I don't want to be that guy but I haven't followed any of this very closely. Why is Iran not guaranteed at least second place at this point?

We are guaranteed 2nd place in our group, but not every 2nd place team qualifies for the next round. Only the top five 2nd place teams do. That's the quandary we're in.

I never understand why Iran struggles with Iraq. I know it's a rivalry game but we should always beat them.
Seriously Iraq had a tough time scoring on Cambodia and are only up 1-0 on HK in the 69th minute.

HK's park the bus/van/camper in the box tactic seems to be working against Iraq. They need ONE surprise attack and they can equalize.
