Why Mehdi Mahdavikia is Iran's greatest footballing legend
I don't care about putting players in some subjective order of greatness, but what's not subjective and backed by stats, is that Mahdavikia & Nekounam have had the most successful/consistent careers playing abroad between all other Iranian players in the history of our football. Consistent meaning not hopping around between team to team and country to country every season or every other season and also not riding the bench for an extended period of time and being a difference maker as a starter in a top league (Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Serie A).
This is why JB, Gucci, Dejagah, Shojaie, Daie, Karimi, Taremi, Sardar who've all had great seasons for their clubs at some point don't belong in the same conversation.

taremi’s career is up there. Tremendous CL success. Multiple trophies. Consistency for multiple seasons…
I would say he had the best career along side Mahdavikia.

100% Agree. Mehdi Taremi comes close but you can't deny that his success came in a lesser league in portugal. Yes, he also did well in champions league, which is why he comes close but let's not forget that Mahdavikia and Nekounam did it every week in a much stronger league, and for a longer period of time!
Mahdavikia played in a tougher league than Taremi, but I think Mehdi’s accomplishments gives him the edge:
-leading goal scorer in the league
-winning the league with Porto
-prolific goal scorer during champion’s league
Also, securing a move to Inter at his age was no small feat.
^ The IR is a killer of any talents we ever had. There is no way they treat an important person well because he gets more popular by day. It is against their agenda.
Mahdavikia, Daei, Karimi and everyone else, were just victims of the regime in Iran.

You’re right, he’s one of the few players we ever had in one of the top Leagues that was a consistent starter. What he’s doing for the youth development in Iran is outstanding. And his iconic WC goal is the cherry on top. He definitely should be praised for the leadership and professionalism he showed throughout his career and afterwards, he really represented us well.
