I got back from LA recently, got to go to both of the matches there.
But before that I have to firstly say, what Ramin has done over the last 3 games has to be the best individual performance of an Iranian player in any tournament. 36 years old, he wasn’t supposed to be here. I’m still sad about what he did going to Esteghlal but he was always one of my favorite players, now as the leading goal scorer it’s crazy. His corner kick crosses, versatility, calmness, heart and offensive threat is absolutely nuts. During the New Zealand game I think he made that run that led to the goal at least 30 times.
The LA experience was super good overall. The vibe in the stadium was amazing and the games were super fun, but obviously still very politically charged. Every corner there were Iranians fighting and swearing at each other. It felt like no matter what you did, said, didn’t say, wore, you’d get verbally attacked. On my way to the stadium people would come up to you with cameras in your face and would without any reason accuse you of which side you’re on. I got blocked off while exiting the game with a woman swearing at me and my entire family while I literally was walking quietly, not interacting or engaging with her. Outside of the stadiums it was non stop fights. The people there with zero conflict were the Mexicans lol. Those guys were just simply there having a blast.
But inside the stadium I have to say it felt like it was a home game. The three offside goals in each of the 3 games have been so tough accept, especially today against Egypt. I guess I learned something new about the offside rule after all these years, but even still, the Egyptian players foot closest to Shoja still looks like it’s behind him keeping him on to me.
I am happy after my whole life supporting team Melli I was able to go to a World Cup game. I feel like some of these players are truly giving everything they have to make us happy during difficult times. I support everyone to make their own decisions, those who didn’t watch the games, and those who like me saved their money and spent a lot to support the team in person when they could. I hope we make it to the next round and we for once see Iran play more than 3 games in the World Cup.
