Nobody is saying football matters more than freedom. I don’t think anyone actually believes that and I don’t think that’s what the poll was really about either.
People are pouring genuine pain into this space and you just have to respect that. But if the argument is that Team Melli doing well at the World Cup is what keeps this regime standing, then that’s a pretty damning admission about how weak the movement actually is. A government that has been brutalizing its own people for 47 years doesn’t survive because of a football result. If it’s that fragile, we have much bigger problems than this poll.
You’re not raising awareness here. Everyone in this forum already knows the regime and its supporters are evil. Sure you bring individual players and actions to light but that’s not the debate. So the question is what are we actually accomplishing by tearing into each other in this space? Look at how many people used to come through here and look at it now. That drop isn’t just apathy. Some of it is this. People get exhausted and they leave.
I’ve been going to protests. I can tell you the crowds are getting smaller, not bigger. That’s where the energy needs to go. Not here.
One last thing. I used the term overwhelming majority earlier and that wasn’t precise. Two thirds is a supermajority.
