Mali just came off AFCON where they drew with Morocco and Tunisia, then held Russia to a 0-0 right before facing Iran. Winless in 5 but clearly not a side you just roll over.Originally posted by FeLFeL View Post
Beating Gambia and Mali (never made it to a WC!) are impressive results while Iraq draws against Spain? Lol OK...
Iraq meanwhile parked the bus for 90 minutes against Spain and got bailed out by a moment of individual brilliance. Thatās your benchmarkā š

That is absolutely my benchmark. You can dismiss Iraq achieving a great result against a top contender based on how they played, and chances are they won't be able to get the same result in a world cup match against Spain, but that is not even the point. It's about the level of competition. You don't prepare for the world cup by taking on easy opponents this late in the process playing 2nd/3rd tier African nations.Originally posted by Bavafa View PostMali just came off AFCON where they drew with Morocco and Tunisia, then held Russia to a 0-0 right before facing Iran. It's OK to take on easier opponents in earlier stages of preparation to test things out and it definitely beats lining up your A vs B teams against each other like TM did, but as you get closer to the world cup, you want players to adjust to the level and pace of the world cup. So yeah playing one of those teams (Not both) 40-50 days ago may have been fine followed by playing better teams, but we all know that due to politics, etc. nobody good wanted to play us. So stop trying to normalize TM's preparation leading up to the world cup like everything else. It's disgusting and nauseating.

If nobody good wanted to play Iran due to politics, thatās not on TM, thatās the reality theyāre operating in. You canāt hold them responsible for a scheduling problem thatās entirely out of their hands and then call it disgusting and nauseating like they had options on the table they refused. And Iraq drawing Spain by sitting in their own half for 90 minutes isnāt āadjusting to World Cup pace,ā itās damage limitation. Those are two very different things.
Normalizing? Disgusting and nauseating? Iām looking at results and context. Youāre the one normalizing Iraqās draw as a quality benchmark when they barely left their own half. If thatās disgusting to you, thatās a you problem.

I think I read somewhere that they didn't even bring a full squad but only 15 or so players, a lot of players had better plans apparently so they came up with some excuses. Dont quote me on this though, I'm sure some other members can confirm.Originally posted by Bavafa View PostIād be curious to know which squad Mali brought to this friendly. These are back to back impressive results by TM!

This isn't anything new. Iran is sanctioned, has never had good World Cup prep or been able to set up a good friendly. We know š
