this theory started when knock out stages was added to tournaments. Back in the 80s when Tehran league was 2 groups and had 1vs 2 matches as a 6 year old I remember my dad and grand pa wanted pp lose a match so we don't play ss in semi , but pp won that match any way lol and we beat ss in semi 3-0 and beat shahin in final so I learned this theory at a very very young age and every tournament that comes up I spend good amount of time studying all possiBle scenarios.
The woman team imo did right thing by not finishing 1st on purpose.

Because if they lose to Japan not just they are out but also no wc.
Now by finishing second they minimum pretty much guaranteed themself a play off match for a winner to go to the wc even if they lose to Japan in semi.
