I have suggested a Point system for Team Melli performance. to rank players and coaches.

however, the factor of "quality of the opposition" has to be taken into account.

Iran winning japan 1-0 shd carry more points than 1-0 defeat of lebanon.

Now, the easiest way to put a number to it is the fifa ranking the teams hold. Japan's ranking higher therefore more points.

how to score, then? I can only guess and this is open to debate.
say team X is 57th in the world. and it defeats 34th team.
apart from the points you have mentioned above, we add more points for the fact that it was a HIGHER ranked team.

but then team X plays 19th team and wins. certainly it shd get more points than the game against 34th.

we can divide the teams ABOVE the team x in fifa ranking by every 10 team.
hence team x ( 57th ) will have 5 groups of 10 team each ABOVE it.
- for winning teams within its group , 51-60, team x gets no points.
- for teams 41-50, X gets 1 point extra. ( or you can make it 2. up to you )
- for teams 31-40, X gets 2 ( or perhaps 3 or 4 ) extra points.
- for teams 21-30 , X gets 3 ( or 4 or 6 ) extra points
- for teams 11-20 , X gets 4 ( or 5 or 8 ) extra p's.
- for teams 1-10, X gets 5 ( or 6 or 10 ) extra points.

once we set the the immediately higher group's points ( Base of 1 or 2 points ), we can either ADD for every group of higher rankings or multiply by 2. up to you.

so if a team ranked 123rd beats the 8th ranked team, they get ( LOOLL ) .... sh*tload of points . But I say they well deserve it. how often do we see such a game with such a disparity ? so even if the points are too much, I say the feat itself is worthy of the points.


for DRAWS, I'd say we stick to a base of 1 point and add 1 extra for every group ( of 10 teams above that ).
for defeating a lower ranked team, we just shrug and give them a cold shoulder and not add. tell the team "what? felan-e ghool ro shikoondi?"



for defeats to lower ranked teams, shd we punish the team with higher ranking?
I'd say deduction of 1 point per group ( of 10 teams ).

same with continents.
winning a european team shd carry more weight than an asia on one from oceania or even north/central america.
I guess based on fifa rankings and general sense, europe shd hold first place, followed closely by south america, then africa, then north/central americas, asia and finally oceania. altho I'd say asia = north/central americas.

ranking could be:
1- europe
2- South america
3- africa
joint 4- asia & north/central americas
5- oceania

if new zealand beats a south american team, we add +3 ( or 6, double the difference in ranking ) .
or if Fiji beats england, we add +4 ( or 8, double the difference in ranking ) ( and I personally will add 100 to any team beating england and Italy )


same thing for Draws. add +1 for every higher category.
0 for the same category.

good idea. this is one of those already done things by the advanced footballing nations. Maybe you could tell us how they do it?

I will just go over the basic points allotments although a lot of other categories and factors have been mentioned in this thread that can be added to complete the overall picture.


TEAM category- we played with an asian ( continental points ) team, ranked XX ( ranking points ), at home ( venue points ), with score of 0-0 ( results points ), in a WCQ game ( competition points ) .

COACH category - coach was EZ ( coaching points ), getting a draw ( result points ) at home ( venue points ), in his third match as the coach ( tenure points ), played with an asian ( continental points ) team, ranked XX ( ranking points ), in a WCQ game ( competition points ) .



PLAYER category- players played will receive their points ( caps points ). starters and subs receive corresponding points.
plus they receive the result points for the game as well.


and we can add a few other data to the above set and get a more realistic view on the game.
