Tasnim – TEHRAN, Iran captain Ashkan Dejagah has been invited to join the national team after Mehdi Taremi drops out due to injury.

Marc Wilmots had earlier named his 23-man Iran squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Hong Kong, slated for August 31 but Dejagah was not among the invited players.

Wilmots called up Dejagah to Team Melli on Tuesday for the Hong Kong match in leue of the injured Mehdi Taremi.

Taremi suffered a foot injury in the match against Sporting Lisbon and Iran coaching staff decided to travel to Hong Kong without the Rio Ave striker.

Iran will play Hong Kong at Hong Kong Stadium on September 10.

Team Melli is pitted with Iraq, Bahrain, Cambodia and Hong Kong in Group C.

The eight group winners and four best runners-up will advance to the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Finals and the final round of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
