PFDC – TEHRAN, In a match where seven yellow cards were handed out, El Jaish held firm for a 2-0 victory over Naft Tehran in the play-off round of the 2016 AFC Champions League.

Nearly four thousand fans were in attendance at the Azadi Stadium for a playoff matchup between El Jaish of Qatar and Naft Tehran. In the same scenario one year ago, Naft defeated El Jaish 1-0. This time El Jaish were determined to not let history repeat itself.

Just after the hour, a ball sent into the Naft penalty area by Mohamed Mothnani wasn’t cleared to safety. Instead, the ball went high up into the air and fell to Abdo Hamdallah. The Moroccan striker easily fought off defender Siamak Kouroshi and half-volleyed the ball into the net past Naft keeper Alireza Beiranvand to give El Jaish a 1-0 lead.

Naft pushed forward and did everything they could to try to find the equalizer but were officially finished in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Romarinho scored on a breakaway to give El Jaish the 2-0 victory.

The win means that El Jaish will play in Group D of the AFC Champions League.
