They did it again in 1986, losing intentionally to Denmark so they would get Morocco in the next round instead of Spain.

thats a different story and many teams do it and continue to do it even today.
to lose on purpose to get a weaker opposition is not exactly cheating since ur only deciding ur own fate and nobody else's fate.

it may considered unsportsmanship conduct, or cowardly, but its not cheating. its the teams choice to play in a way to get the easier opponent.

in one of recent euros, i remember holland losing to belarus inorder to reduce its seeding and be placed in POT 2 since POT 1 had teams like austria, switzerland (both hosts) and greece (previous champs) while pot 2 had croatia, italy, and some other strong european teams and obviously its much better to be part of pot 2 and get a pot 1 team rather than be in pot 1 and get a pot 2 team but their ranking was still high enough to get pot 1 and then they got a group with italy, france and one more decent european team landing them in the group of death. they came 1st in that group though.


the austria game is different cos the fate of algeria lied in germany's hand and germany abused it.

overall, belgium is a better team than turkey and germany's only narrow win in this group came against belgium (2-1) but football is a game of moments and circumstances, so u never know.
