Not officially. In tournament format, it's just used as a decider to see who goes to the next round. I didn't make it up, FIFA did.

A team that loses a penalty shoot-out is eliminated from the tournament but it does not count as a defeat, while the winning team in the shoot-out advances but does not get a match victory. For instance, the Netherlands are considered to have concluded the 2014 FIFA World Cup undefeated, despite being eliminated at the semi-final stage.

i dont give a hoots about Asian cups, nor any other Asian accolades, but im with you on the 2nd round/qf appearance @ WC..!
to win tournaments besides being a good team , you also need Discipline, Winners-attitude/Confidence, and a healthy dose of luck..!
The fact that we havent really Won any/many Major tournament in quiet sometimes regardless of our historical head to head superiority to any other Asian side would suggest that regardless of our clear superior continental passion for the game and overall better talent-depth, historically we have shown Not to be so Clutch of a performer, severely lacking in Discipline, that Winners-vigor and at times even luck has abandon us ..!!
of all our marquee shortcomings, imo, Lack of Discipline and true belief in Concept of TEAM PLAY has been the most damaging. mostly because culturally, we are just too much of hero worshiper society and as a result many of our Star players have gotten BigHead syndrome and fallen victim to immature BacheNanegi hence resulting in Team Disharmony, Partibazi and system-wide football corruption..!!
This is the one Huge Problem that CQ has taken Head-On and its no wonder he gets so much push-back, mostly from Used-to-be Hero(hot-shitts) who suddenly feel not all so important anymore..!!
If Carlos can continue to circumvent their constant efforts to derail his disciplinary revolution of TM , if our Team continues on this trend of Playing more as a Unit and our Star footballers realize that regardless of their importance to TM success they are Not ever going to be put above the TEAM nor Irreplaceable, THEN the wins will naturally stack-up and with it that Winners Attitude/Confidence i talked about earlier will follow naturally ..!!
Im also big believer that mostly you Make your Own Luck and Fortunes Favor the Most Prepared..!!

I agree. Asian cups would be great - but only because we haven' won in forever - but definitely not even in same stratosphere as going to 2nd round WC or even making the WC. Our game vs. Argentina, the fact the world saw that, is worth 10 Asian Cups (the most useless Continental title). South Korea hasn't won it even longer than us but they've made 9 straight WCs. Give me that any day of the week.

Just imagine that if we had the same tactically improved TM with the same mindset as now through all those years, we would have probably been not only the best and unbeatable in Asia and Oceania, but also very respected trough out the world, much higher than Japan and S.Korea, specially with the pool of talents that exist in Iran.

I hope the next generation of Iranian coaches would be more professional and realize what CQ has done with TM and improve even more.

Strangely enough, our record is even against Turkmenistan.... seven matches played, two wins for each side, and three draws.

What the Australians think of OAR. Some of us have been saying the same thing but that's apparently racist.

In Asia, and especially in the United Arab Emirates, there is no bigger star than Omar Abdulrahman - the man dubbed the 'Arabian Messi'.

                    27 MAR 2017 - 5:54 PM UPDATED 27 MAR 2017 - 5:54 PM

The reigning AFC Player of the Year has been the poster boy of the UAE's ascent in recent years, with his wizardry winning him an army of fans across the continent, and indeed the world.

But while his reputation as a showman lives on, his reputation as a big game player is, unfortunately, taking a battering.

When the pressure is at its most intense, when he needs to stand up and deliver, he’s often nowhere to be found.

It was the case in last year’s AFC Champions League final which his club Al Ain lost to Korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. He played like a player burdened by the pressure of expectation. You could see it written all over his face.

And, perhaps encouragingly for the Socceroos, it was the case again last week in the UAE’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Japan, played in what is his backyard – Al Ain’s Hazza bin Zayed Stadium.

It was the perfect stage for Abdulrahman to deliver and enhance his reputation; to show he really is Asia’s best player, to take the game by the scruff of the neck and haul UAE over the line and get the much-needed three points.

Instead UAE lost 2-0 with little more than a whimper, and the playmaker was again a peripheral figure in the game, hugely overshadowed by Japan's Shinji Kagawa.

Heading into Tuesday's match against the Socceroos a lot of the pressure will fall on the shoulders of UAE talisman Abdulrahman.

The afro-haired 25-year-old is the barometer for this Emirati side and if the UAE is to have any chance of defeating Australia he needs to lift his game, as they can’t win if he’s not pulling the strings.

But it's not just Abdulrahman feeling the heat.

The UAE currently sit four points behind Saudi Arabia and Japan and face a tough task against an equally desperate Australia in Sydney on Tuesday.

Anything but a win would all but end the UAE's hopes of qualifying for just their second ever FIFA World Cup.

That Mahdi Ali is still in charge is a surprise to some. Speculation swirled that he would be shown the door after their qualifier against Iraq in November.

But the red baseball cap-wearing tactician will surely know he is skating on thin ice after their insipid display against Japan last week.

A loss to Australia will likely end his long tenure in charge of this talented generation, who he has coached from under 19 level.

Ali insists, however, he is not giving any consideration to his future and is worried only about Tuesday’s match.

"I am a professional coach, so I am not thinking about [resigning]," Ali said after their loss to Japan last week.

"We have another game coming. We lost only three points here. We have not lost our chances to qualify."

Socceroos trapped by Australia's great expectations
One of the worst drawbacks of the modern game is that national associations and clubs cannot afford to be patient and engage in long-term planning.
Mabkout will lead the line, and the leading scorer in the Arabian Gulf League will need to be more ruthless in front of goal.

The Golden Boot winner at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup was guilty of wasting chances the last time UAE played Australia in Abu Dhabi in September, and spurned a glorious chance to equalise against Japan last week - a miss that proved quite costly in the end.

The return of Ahmed Khalil, who has overcome his calf problem and is expected to replace Ismail Matar in the starting XI, will add extra strength to the Emirati attack.

Khalil is the UAE's leading scorer in qualifying, with four goals in this third round of qualifying and 15 in total across the second and third rounds.

Australia’s new-look defence was badly exposed at times by Iraq last Thursday, but they cannot afford to be so generous to Mabkhout and Khalil.

                      .

But But But ... he won Asian Player of the Year!

You know, the award where the 2nd place finisher of the award was heralded for his performances in the AFC Cup! That's the right, the AFC Cup, where strong clubs from Indian, Iraq and Bangladesh duke it out!

They are not official wins - for the millionith time. FIFA does not see them as official wins/losses. That's the rule.

Asian cup games of course count.

Penalties are not official results as far as wins/losses. They determine who moves on in the tournament, that's all.
