AFC – HANOI, A sparkling performance from Sara Ghomi helped the Islamic Republic of Iran to a dominant 6-0 Group D win over Singapore on Wednesday, a victory which keeps alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 AFC Women\u2019s Asian Cup in Jordan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The richly deserved success was Iran\u2019s first in the qualifying tournament, following Monday\u2019s 2-0 campaign opening defeat at the hands of Myanmar.<\/p>\n

With 29-year-old forward Ghomi, who was to score in each half, proving to be a constant thorn in the side of the Singaporean defence, Maryam Azmoun\u2019s side were quick to take control of the match, creating chances and forcing a series of corners.<\/p>\n

Their early pressure went without reward, however, until Zhara Ghanbari\u2019s thumping strike from the edge of the penalty area gave them the lead after fourteen minutes.<\/p>\n

The Iranians doubled their lead almost instantly when Ghomi\u2019s spectacular volley on the turn beat goalkeeper Noor Kusumawati less than a minute later, to put her side firmly in the driver\u2019s seat with well over an hour to play.<\/p>\n

As Iran\u2019s confidence grew, so did their dominance of a Singapore side which consistently struggled to gain a foothold in the match, and was hampered by chief attacking weapons Nur Raudhah Khamis and Lim Li Xian\u2019s inability to exert any real influence on proceedings.<\/p>\n

By way of contrast, the Iranian midfield trio of Ghomi, Ghanbari and Shabnam Behest ran riot, a dominance which paid off once again seven minutes into the second half.<\/p>\n

This time, Kusumawati spilled Behesht\u2019s shot, and Ghomi was on hand to steer the ball into the empty net for her second of the match and put the result beyond any doubt.<\/p>\n

As the Singaporeans tired in the latter stages, substitute Fatemeh Ghaesmi added a fourth goal with five minutes remaining, before striker Foroogh Mouri made it five two minutes later.<\/p>\n

Mouri then rounded Kusumawati to complete Iran\u2019s scoring spree in the dying stages of the match, and put the icing on a near-perfect performance.<\/p>\n

With their campaign now seemingly back on track, Iran can look forward the luxury of a day off Matchday Three before returning for what looms as a crucial meeting with Vietnam on Sunday, while Singapore will face the same opponents on Friday.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cAfter analysing Singapore\u2019s game with Syria, we decided we needed to push hard. That\u2019s why we played three forwards instead of the normal one or two. We need to score as many as possible in case the luck is on our side and we can get back into this tournament after our defeat. Sara Ghomi is one of the best players in Iran. One of our outstanding players. Not just her, our whole team played well today, but she was outstanding. You never know what\u2019s going to happen. You can\u2019t say what will happen in the other games. After our game against Vietnam we will be more clear about our chances in this tournament<\/p>\n

\n\u201cOur opponents were physically very strong and quite skilful. They played very well and it\u2019s a good lesson for our players to learn. (For the next game against Vietnam) our girls will be mentally prepared. They will look forward and see it as a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n
