The Times of India – BENGALURU, Iran coach Carlos Queiroz was impressed by India’s spirited performance on Tuesday and said it was up to the authorities here to help take the game to the next level. <\/strong><\/p>\n

“We were really surprised by India’s performance in the first half. They really came hard at us. The two centre forwards and the two wingers pressed forward and it was a big surprise as we never expected this,” Quieroz told reporters after the World Cup and Asian qualifier which his team won 3-0. <\/p>\n

“Sunil (Chhetri) gave us a lot of headaches. In fact, it was India’s spirited performance that gave our boys a wake-up call. We corrected a few things in the second half and the second goal gave us confidence that we would win the match,” the well-known coach from Portugal said while denying an Iranian reporter’s suggestion that his side didn’t press for more goals. Quierez said the All India Football Association will have to find its own way forward. “I’m told Asia contributes to more than 65 per cent of the global football revenue but what do we get back. We get just four places to compete in the World Cup,” he pointed out. <\/p>\n

“It is up to India to invest in the grass roots to nurture players. They have to give more exposure to the senior players to help them compete against the best. From what I saw Indians deserve to be higher in the group. You need to put your own programme to improve as nobody will come to help you,” he said. <\/p>\n

‘Two goals in five minutes killed us’ <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, India coach Stephen Constantine was keen to carry the good work forward. “From what I saw, I’ll say this is the beginning. I hope in the coming months I can give some more reasons to smile,” he said, giving credit to Sunil & Co. “We knew how difficult it is to play Iran but we held up well. But Iran scored when they were least expected to do so.The two goals in five minutes at the start of the second half killed us,” the Englishman said. Looking ahead, Constantine said: “We are still not out of contention for a place in the Asian Championships.
