The match was good and Al Ain had a strong performance and could have scored on several occasions but we knew how to win the match and get the three points,” said Esteghlal coach Amir Ghalenoei.

“We played with a faster pace than Al Ain and we luckily qualified from such strong group. Our aim is to continue winning in the competition and to reach as far as we can in order to compete for the title.”

With Al Ain needing to win, Esteghlal’s Mehdi Rahmati was by far the busier of the goalkeepers in an entertaining opening 45 minutes with the visiting custodian called into action on numerous occasions.

The most eye-catching came after 22 minutes as Rahmati had to be on his toes to push a dipping effort from midfielder Mohamed Abdulrahman over the crossbar before turning away a close range effort from defender Ismail Ahmed with his feet.

Al Ain continued to press in the second half as Jires Kembo-Ekoko curled an effort just wide of the upright eight minutes after the hour mark.

But with 12 minutes remaining Esteghlal substitute Siavash Akbarpour was adjudged to have been bundled over by Al Ain replacement Mohamed Ahmad Gharib inside the area and Nekounam fired high past goalkeeper Dawoud Sulaiman at the second time of asking.

Al Ain continued to press and Rahmati again came to Esteghlal’s rescue in stoppage time as the goalkeeper saved at the feet of substitute Ali Al Wehaibi following good work from Omar Abdulrahman.

“We had a good performance in the match and we were the better side, but the goalkeeper of Esteghlal was in his best form and he saved many chances and denied us from scoring and winning the match,” said Al Ain coach Cosmin Olaroiu.

“The defeat will definitely not affect our players and I have talked to them and congratulated them for the good performance. We endured some circumstances in the competition and we couldn’t qualify to the knockout stage.”

Watch the highlights from PFDC TV.

https://vimeo.com/65171545

AFC – AL AIN, Javad Nekounam’s second-half penalty proved the difference as Iran Pro League leaders…

[90,84

post-14394","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-c17-asian-competitions","category-c47-featured-news
["GET
