Second Bundesliga-halfseason starts for Iranian quartet

by Martin Reza Babry

PFDC - KAISERSLAUTERN, Neo-Iranian international Ferydoon Zandi will be the only Iranian player to start for his team this weekend, when German Bundesliga resumes after the winter break.

The 25-year-old playmaker, who is expected to give his Team Melli debut against Bosnia on February 2, recovered from an eye-injury he had suffered in a test match and will once again fill the offensive postion behind the strikers when FC Kaiserslautern will be hosted by FC Nurnberg on Saturday.

Despite Bayern Munich having to do without three strikers, Iranian export Vahid Hashemian will probably see most of the game from the bench. The goalgetter, who is linked to Borussia Dortmund, proved to be out of shape in recent friendly matches and is only third choice for Bayern's attack against Hamburg on Friday behind Roy Makaay and Alexander Zickler.

On the other side countryman Mehdi Mahdavikia is also not expected to start after Hamburg-coach Thomas Doll told German papers the Iranian winger's training performances were not convincing enough to earn the 26-year-old a place in the starting lineup.

Vfl Bochum will start their campaign to avoid relegation on Sunday against Hertha Berlin. Young Iranian midfielder Moharam Navidkia will not start for Bochum, however, might well be subbed in to give his Bundesliga debut after missing out the whole first season-half due to a knee injury he had suffered in an Olympic qualifier in early 2004.
