Iranians play crucial roles in Europe

by Martin Reza Babry

PFDC – HAMBURG, Mehdi Mahdavikia seems on his way back to good form, as the Iranian winger booked his first assist of the season, setting up Hamburg’s winner against Vfb Stuttgart on Saturday.

The Team Melli player curled in a freekick after 54 minutes, which was headed home by defender Daniel van Buyten. Mahdavikia, who started for Hamburg the third consecutive time, was then replaced by a defender in minute 78, after displaying a strong performance. The 27-year-old will appear in an All-Star Team alongside many international stars in FIFA’s “Football for Hope” match in Nou Camp on Tuesday. Hamburg now stand in sixth position of the table, only one rank behind Stuttgart, who occupy a UEFA cup spot.

Also neo-Iranian international Fereydoon Zandi had a good Bundesliga weekend. The playmaker, who was subbed in at halftime, scored the winner in Kaiserslauterns 2-1 victory over Hansa Rostock. The 25-year-old netted from close range with a spectacular diving header.

Moharram Navidkia (Bochum) and Vahid Hashemian (Bayern) were not in the 18-men selections of their teams, however, both clubs suffering defeats without the Iranians.

In Italy, Rahman Rezaei returned into Messina’s starting lineup after a one-match-suspension and helped his side to achieve a 2-2 draw in Siena. The defensive man assisted Messina's second goal and showed a pleasing performance in central defense , although the Sicilians conceded a late equalizer from the hosts, who had been reduced to ten men in first half.

Austrian Bundesliga will resume next Saturday for Mehdi Pashazadeh and Javad Razzaghi. The Iranian duo, which had been transferred from Sturm Graz to Iranian-lead Admira Wacker will face Pashazadeh’s former club Rapid Vienna.
