German official denies report on Zandi joining Iranian National Team

IRNA - BERLIN, A spokesman for German Bundesliga club FC Kaiserslautern on Monday denied Iranian media reports about an agreement between German-Iranian midfielder Fereydoon Zandi and the Iran Football Federation on him joining the Iranian national football team.

"It`s a false report. It would be wise for the Iranian media to stick to the truth. As far as I know, Fereydoun Zandi has not yet decided (on the Iranian offer). It still remains unclear as to when he will make his final decision," Kaiserslautern spokesperson Michael Novak told IRNA.

The Iranian sports press reported Sunday that Zandi had allegedly agreed to play for Iran`s national squad. Iranian national team coach Branco Ivankovic has repeatedly expressed hope Zandi would finally decide to play for his father`s homeland.

There had been contradictory reports in the German media about Zandi`s degree of interest in playing for Iran. The 26-year old Zandi, whose father is Iranian and mother is German, was reportedly having second doubts over his teaming with
Iran.

FIFA rule changes would allow the former member of Germany`s Under-21 national football squad to play for Iran`s A-team during the second stage of the 2006 World Cup qualifying phase.
