Tehran Times – TEHRAN, Iran were held to a goalless draw against India in the 2018 AFC U-16 Championship on Monday.

The result put Abbas Chamanian’s team on brink of the competition’s elimination.

Iran could have won the match after the referee rewarded them a penalty in the 74th minute but Alireza Bavieh failed to convert the penalty.

Also, India almost found the net in stoppage time when Lalchhanhime Sailo broke free in the middle but he fired his effort just wide as the match ended goalless.

Iran, who started the campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Indonesia, must defeat Vietnam in Group C in their final group match, while India face Indonesia.

“India did not play the beautiful game. If we scored the first goal early, things would have been different. We could have scored two goals and show the beautiful football to people. We lost the chance to earn three points but we will be prepared for the next game,” Chamanian commented after the match.

The top four teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru as the AFC representatives.

The competition is being played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from Sept. 20 to Oct. 7.
