Tehran Times – TEHRAN, Former Iran captain Javad Nekounam announced retirement from football on Friday.

The 35-year-old midfielder played at Qatari club Al-Arabi SC last season.

“As a football player, retiring is the toughest decision you have to make and I don’t make it lightly. When I was a kid, I didn’t know to hang up the shoes means you have to forget your dreams,” Nekounam released a statement.

Nekounam spent most of his professional career with Pas and Spain’s Osasuna, appearing in 197 official games and scoring 31 goals during his two spells with the latter and also being team captain.

He has represented the Iranian national team 151 times, playing several major tournaments including two World Cups and four Asian Cups.
