Tehran Times – TEHRAN, Iranian international goalkeeper Alireza Haghighi believes he had a decent performance at the last summer World Cup in Brazil despite Iran’s elimination from the group stages.

“Before the World Cup, I wished to be featured in the starting line-up and fortunately, that happened. I believe I had a good performance at World Cup as I featured alongside four keepers who managed to keep a clean sheet in the tournament,” Haghighi told reporters.

“The 91st minute of the game against Argentina was the worst moment of our World Cup campaign. We conceded a very late goal by Argentinean genius Lionel Messi, the player who is able to change the destiny of every game at any level. I couldn’t do anything with that ball, but now that game has gone to the history books and I’m glad to play against Argentina’s great team with such stars,” Haghighi added.

Lionel Messi curled a stunning 91st-minute winner to break the deadlock against hard fought Iran at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Team Iran will also play a friendly against Uzbekistan on June 11 before taking on Turkmenistan in the preliminary qualification rounds of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
