Iran-South Korea friendly match set for November 18

Tasnim – TEHRAN, South Korea Football Association said its national team’s friendly encounter with Iranian national football team will be held on November 18 in Tehran, ahead of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

The friendly match had earlier been announced by Iran’s Football Federation without mentioning the exact date and the place.

Iran has been pitted against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and Bahrain in Group C of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup due to be held in Australia in January next year, while the South Koreans have been drawn with tournament host Australia, Kuwait and Oman in Group A.

The competitions are considered the 16th edition of the AFC Asian Cup which for the first time in the AFC history will be hosted outside the continent of Asia.

The winner of the tournament will earn the right to compete for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, which is to be hosted by Russia.

Since 1958 when the two teams played for the first time in Tokyo’s Asian Games, they have so far encountered 27 times. Iran has won 11 matches, and the Koreans have managed to defeat Iran 9 times, while 7 matches have ended in draw.

Iran last defeated South Korea twice in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
