Iran vs Lebanon Post Match Ratings & Discussion

What an ugly first half... Second half was better IMO but first half was an absolute mess. With this style of football unfortunately we'd be lucky to even get a point at the World Cup...

Skocic- 3, awful game plan, zero tactical awareness in terms of Lebanese sitting back. No set piece tactics, no corner tactics, just hold possession and pass around the back until our MVP agha otoboos creates for us.

Beiranvand- 6, his foot work and positioning is always nerve wrecking to watch. I'm much more comfortable with Abedzadeh in goal.

Noorafkan- 5, looks very mediocre.. Awful defensive positioning but unlike Moharrami doesn't have the technical prowess to get away with it.

Majid- 6.5, overall solid. His positioning defensively might actually be worse than Shoja's but he is much better 1v1 and on the ball.

Kanaani- 9 (MOTM). Wow... Kanaani is not only my MOTM for today's game, but I also choose him as my MVP for the entire qualifications. He has been excellent in almost every match and super consistent. Wins almost every duel and challenge he makes! Saved Nourollahi, Moharrami and Noorafkan's ass so many times today and saved Esmailifar's too when he had a poor back pass.. He's the heart of this defense right now

Moharrami- 6, Technique wise very good, but crosses and defensive positioning very questionable. Especially his crossing... This guy struggles getting any lift on the ball... Still an OK game considering he has very good agility and can get by defenders by overlapping well

Ezatolahi- 5.5, looked out of shape. Bad fouls and got a yellow and had to play very reserved the rest of the half before getting subbed.

Nourollahi- 4.5, there is absolutely no way this guy is team melli material. Holy crap it's almost impressive to play this bad and continue getting starts... The commentator on OneFootball said it best by admitting "Nourollahi is a little bit blind" He has no vision and poor technique. Sure he has a good engine but that doesn't get you anywhere at the World Cup.

Gholizadeh- 5.5, this guy is so overrated.. Weak physically and while he does have good technique, he loses the ball with such ease. Not impressed tbh...

Allahyar- 6, couldn't really do much today. Not really sure how to rate him.. Looked a bit invisible yet he didn't really do anything wrong either. Didn't get much service and was double teamed immediately every time he got the ball.

ARJ- 7.5, I would've given him an 8 but he had a few bad giveaways and could've been more pacey as well. Besides that, he was very good! Great ball winning and created so many turnovers defensively! Awesome goal and some excellent chances created with his shooting ability. Second best player today after Kanaani...

Azmoun- 7, scored a nice goal in the first half but otherwise would've gotten a 6.5 for me. Looks out of shape and you can tell because of how many times he was caught offsides. Azmoun is usually an onside specialist... Still, he made some good runs. Hold up play could've been a lot better from him as well...

    Subs:

Mehdipour- 7, our best substitute today alongside Hosseinzadeh. This guy was the best midfielder. Classy on the ball, great vision, excellent close out speed and great defending to win back balls and tackles. A good performance.

Sarlak- 5.5, didn't do anything in literally every game i've watched him play. He's made a few okay tackles here and there but he is a liability with his lack of physical strength. Got bullied off the ball by Lebanon. Not the most intelligent passer either.

Torabi- 6, had a good 1st corner then his second corner was absolute crap. You can tell he has some decent football IQ and vision but couldn't show much today.

Hosseinzadeh- 6.5 poor guy got about 10 minutes of playing time but looked electric winning a tackle back in the first minute and making good runs across the pitch. Was unlucky the ball was played towards Torabi's side instead of his.

Esmailifar- 5.5, played about 5 minutes but had a bad back pass that Kanaani fortunately cleaned up. Other than that not much to judge.

Looking ahead, I think Iran either needs to have a long camp and get serious about the World Cup or sack Skocic ASAP or both! Because if they continue playing this way, Iran will be in a lot of trouble...

GK - I still rate Beirnavand, but it's good that we have 2 good keepers fighting for the spot. Keeps them on their guard. Let's not forget the days of no back up to the woeful Mirzapour.

Defense - We looked far more steady at cb with Hosseini alongside Kanaani, and unless PAG comes back as good as before they have to be our starting pair. Shoja should be our cover across the back 4. He gets a lot of stick, but Moharrami is by far our best full back. We desperately need cover for him and although I think Noorafkan is ok, we also need a better first choice left back.

Midfield - I'm not a fan at the best of times, but Nourollahi as one of 2 c-mids definitely does not work. I doubt Skocic would risk that against WC quality, but let's hope he's definitely ruled that out after this showing. Mehdipour and Hosseinzadeh look promising and should be given more opportunities and we have to wrap Ezzatolahi and Amiri in cotton wool.

Gholizadeh should not be a starter. We looked far more dangerous on the right hand side once JB came over and started linking with Moharrami. Mohebbi should have been given a chance at this camp, and I would have also have brought in Ghaedi. I'd even rather start Torabi than Gholi.

Forwards - Good to see Azmoun build up some fitness. Sayyadmanesh was quiet today, but he should be given more opportunities to build some chemistry - look how long it took JB to actually start delivering something. It will be nice to add another attacking dimension rather than relying on the Taremi-Azmoun combo.

Performance wasn't great today, and some of his squad decisions are baffling but given his record I'm still in favour of giving Skocic some proper backing and preparation. Would have liked him to rotate the squad more, and have a CQ style ability to bring different players in to match up against the opposition, but without the time and preparation this was always unlikely to be possible.

Hosseinzadeh really stood out to me as promising.

we say this every time and than we put up stellar performances based on individual skill and pride. It is what it is my friend, you can bang your head to the wall as much as you want but fundamentally nothing will change in Iran

Regarding players fitness..while I completely agree that we need to work on fitness we should keep in mind that it’s been a long season for domestic players and our legionaries, playing in cups and continental tournaments and it was the final stage of qualification…now add injuries, covid and personal issues…can’t expect 100% from anyone tbh.
                Can’t blame anyone here.
                That’s how football works.
IRI's politics is no different than handling a pressure cooker ..... As the pressure builds up, you slowly let the steam out just a tad bit so that you don't see overflow, and once the pressure from below is less, you put the lid down again and raise the temperature.

Didn’t watch the game, but they need to organize a top friendly immediately and Skocic needs to stop experimenting we don’t have time for sefareshi players. Hopefully we see lose the dead weight, when Shahab Zahedi, Ali Karimi, Yasin Salmani, Ramin Rezaeian, Pouraliganji, Mohebi and Ghaedi come back to the team.

Ali Karimi and Ghaedi don't deserve a place in TM.

I like Shahab but not sure where he fits considering our resources there.

Great job. Finishing first in group. Great win today. ARJ was great. Ahmad noor worst. Scocic needs to work on his tactics. Not convincing coaching. But congrats to Iran and scocic for doing a great job overall.

Ali Karimi and Ghaedi are ten times better than the sefareshi players that got invited to this camp. Remember there’s still next season before the World Cup starts. Ghaedi is still one of our most technical players and if Ali Karimi can return from injury he’s better than lost Mehdipour.

A lackluster performance against the Lebanon B squad..
Our defense looks great with Kanaani, PAG, Majid as our CBs.

Our attack looks ehh to me, but that's largely to missing Taremi who is very key to our attack..
With Jahanbaksh looking solid as of late for TM, a trio of Sardar-JB-Taremi will look great going into the World Cup with Ghoddos behind them.

I'm primarily concerned with our CDM and LB positions.. Omid is average at best and worried teams will run circles around him come WC time.. Ahmad Nour is beginning to worry me more and more..

Esmailfar is not TM material either.. He needs to be excluded and just have Moharammi and Hardani as our two RB options..

Hosseinzadeh looks very promising!! Would love to see him featured more and more.. Probably better to have him than Gholizadeh who is nightmare to watch..
Once again, no game plan from the clueless manager.

ON A SIDE NOTE: Having fans at a TM home game was amazing to see!! Also loved having Mashaad and AQR Stadium as the host!! Hopefully we have more of the smaller TM matches at Mashaad/Isfahan/Shiraz going forward!

Also please don’t tell me you want to go to the World Cup with Hosseinzadeh, Torabi and 35 year old Amiri as your wings.
