Iranian midfielder Ali Karimi was named the 2005 Asian Player of the Year by PFDC & IG.

The "Asian Maradona" was signed by Bayern Munchen this year and was named as one of the best transfers of this season. The other two nominees of this contest were the South Korean midfielder Ji Sung Park and the Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura.

Korean midfielder Ji Sung Park was named as the favorite to win the contest, but the 40.28% of people which voted for him was not enough as Ali Karimi had 55.56% of the votes. The South Korean midfielder had also an excellent year by helping his former team PSV Eindhoven to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Because of his excellent play he was signed by the richest club in the world, Manchester United.

Japanese midfielder wasn't really a favorite among the voters as he only managed to get 4.17% of the total votes. The Japanese playmaker had a not very good season with his former team Reggina Calcio in the Seria A. But he was one of the keyplayers of the Japanese team that made it to the World Cup. He was signed by the former Scottish champions Celtic Glascow in the summer.
