Well, if true then it’s good news. Certainly better than any of our domestic coaches

I dont know what the norm is. If it is not common for a coach to live in the country he is coaching, then thats fine. But there is no obvious reasons in case of Iran. There is absolutely nothing wrong with staying in Iran. Except for partying and drinking, he can do exactly the same in Iran as in any other country.

          wow
When it comes to him, my point still stands. His wife will need to dress accordingly to Iranian law. Boohoo. A small prize to pay for 1.2m a year. If she's not ok with that, she is free to not move with him and visit him when she wants to. We appointed him as our coach, not him and his wife. If at this stage, for 1.2 million euros a year, he cant prioritize career over his family (which is a very common thing to do btw) He should not accept the job offer. But there is no point discussing this, he got the job already.

Belgian Marc Wilmots to lead Iran national football team: official

TEHRAN, May 14 (MNA) – A member of Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran confirmed Tue. previous reports that Belgian Marc Wilmots is going to be announced as the new manager of Iran’s National Football Team in place of Portuguese Carlos Queiroz.

In an interview with Mehr news agency on Tuesday, Fereydoun Esfahanian, a member of the board of directors of Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran confirmed earlier an report by Belgian media that Marc Wilmots is going to be announced as the new manager of Iran’s National Football Team.

Esfahanian hailed the CV of Wilmots, saying that he has so far led several national football teams across the world. He further described the Belgian coach as better than Carlos Queiroz, who stepped down as Iran's football coach, better known as Team Melli back in January and has now signed a contract with Colombian football federation to coach the South American team.

Marc Wiltmos officially announced coach of Iran's national football team

TEHRAN, May 22 (MNA) – The Belgian Marc Wilmots is officially named as the new manager of Iran’s National Football Team, better known as Team Melli.

"Marc Wilmots is now officially Iran's national football team coach," the Twitter account of Iran Mission in the EU has said in a tweet.

The tweet added that today, Mr. Taj, the President of Iranian Football Federation signed a contract with Mr. Wilmots in Brussels.

the Belgian coach took the place of Carlos Queiroz, who stepped down as Iran's football coach, better known as Team Melli back in January and has now signed a contract with Colombian football federation to coach the South American team.

The contract of Iran's new coach is valued at $1,500,000 a year.

If official means that the contract has been signed then where is the IFF announcement? Watch the clip below, Taj clearly states that meetings in Belgium were not about signing the contract ‘bahs-eh ... emzaa nabood’. Of course one should ask why IFF PR person Alavi said earlier in the week that Taj was traveling to Belgium to get the contract signed (see an earlier post by yours truly with the link to Alavi’s interview). As far as I am concerned, this whole thing could still unravel (I am hoping the chance of that is low). The positive point is that they spent two ~4 hour meetings to discuss the obstacles (mavaaneh). Lets hope they will sign soon.

This is all very confusing. The only "official" statement is from the European mission of Iran. Why haven't we seen any press briefing with MW and Taj making this official? Is he, or is he not our coach yet?

It appears the delay is due to his selection of assistants. Wilmots wants to bring his assistants from AA Gent:

Marc Wilmots has spent the last few days in Iran, where he is about to become the new national coach. The former national coach of Belgium and Ivory Coast can sign a contract there until 2022 and can start earning about 1.15 million euros on an annual basis, but for the time being it is still a while waiting for the signatures.

"We are in the final phase of the negotiations," noted Belga with Ibrahim Schakeluri, Secretary General of the Iranian Association. "But the agreement is not yet clear. There are still some small details that need to be resolved."

                      UPDATE 10.05 pm

After many fives and sixes, Wilmots is now starting to work for Iran. That reports Het Laatste Nieuws. The national coach would still have put his signature under the contract proposal, as a result of which he will earn some 1.3 million euros annually until 2022. For Wilmots it will be his third assignment as national coach, after Belgium and Ivory Coast.

On Wednesday, Wilmots normally signed his contract with the Iranian Football Association, which would last until the 2022 World Cup. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed. Wilmots is already thinking about which technical members he will bring. Het Nieuwblad knows that Manu Ferrera (promising coach AA Gent) and Thierry Verjans are mentioned. Herman De Landstheer (former AA Ghent) can become a video analyst."

Good news! I hope Marc Wilmots improves the offensive side of our boys, so as a former legendary forward player himself he should have another vision of game than what our players used to

That's great, but what happened to Wilmots?

^ The contract is yet to be signed otherwise we would have seen an official announcement on the IFF website and Taj would have said it in his interview earlier today.
